Shota Ono sprained his left ankle while running out a grounder during Thursday's practice game against Lotte.  He could not stand and had to be taken off the field on a stretcher.  He was removed from the game and taken to a hospital in Nago, Okinawa.  He will return to Tokyo on Friday for a full examination.

Shohei Otani will be appearing in the descente baseball equipment catalog.  His photo shoot took place on Wednesday.  At nineteen years of age, he will be the youngest player to appear in the catalog.  The youngest player before Otani was most likely Tsuyoshi Shinjo at twenty-one years.  Source: Nikkan Sports 2/20/2014

Sho Nakata developed a cramp in his right calf during practices on the 11th.  The calf has not been quite the same since then.  The trainers asked the coaches on the 17th to give the slugger a pass during base-running exercises as a precaution.  He did get the start a third during Tuesday's practice game against Samsung.

  • Kazuyuki Hoashi started the game for the Reds and tossed two shutout innings. He allowed one hit.
  • Paul Oseguera started the game for the Whites and did not allow a run over two innings.
  • Dennis Sarfate entered the game in the 6th for the Whites and tossed a shutout inning. He surrendered two hits and topped out at 150km/h.
  • 2nd round draft pick Yuito Mori entered the game in the 7th for the Whites and did not allow a run in an inning of work.

[2/15/2014] Nippon Ham Fighters News and Notes

Hiroshi Kisanuki was taking things slow at Ni-gun camp because of an injury to his left calf.  He tossed 140 pitches in the bullpen on the 13th and joined the rest of the Ni-gun players in regular workouts on the 14th.  Assuming no setbacks, he could still be ready for the start of the regular season.

Shohei Otani will likely continue to pitch in games on six days of rest.  That could mean outings on February 22 (vs Lotte), March 1 (vs Hiroshima), and March 8 (vs Hanshin).  The game on March 8 will be at Koshien Stadium.  If he pitches on March 8, he will be taking the mound at Koshien for the first time since 2012.

The Ni-gun players worked out at Nago camp on Friday.  Ichi-gun had the day off.  Hideki Kuriyama and the Ichi-gun coaches watched over Ni-gun workouts.

Runners stole eleven bases when Shohei Otani was on the mound last year (13 games, 61.2 innings).  He has been working on his slide step and was measured at around 1.21 seconds during his bullpen session on Tuesday (1.25 seconds is considered adequate in the NPB).  His time may have improved, but he still needs to work on his balance and control with the slide step.

  • Ren Nakata threw two perfect innings.  He threw sixteen pitches and struck out one.
  • Shota Dobayashi started at third and batted lead-off for the Reds.  He took an HBP off his head in his first trip to the plate.  It was a breaking pitch Keisuke Imai lost control of.  Dobayashi was replaced by a pinch-runner, but returned to the game on defense in the 2nd.
  • Jun Hirose went 2-for-2: with runners on first and third and no out in the 1st, RBI single to left of Keisuke Imai; with a runner on second and two out in the 3rd inning, RBI single to right off Tomohiro Umetsu; and a walk.  He has reached base in his last six trips to the plate.
