Softbank Hawks

  • The Hawks allowed five home runs on Wednesday for the first time since a game against Lotte on May 13, 2009 (Tadahito Iguchi, Tsuyoshi Nishioka, Naotaka Takehara, Benny Agbayani, and Kazuya Fukuura, all off Kenji Otonari). ... Hayato Terahara's next start will most likely come on the 30th against Orix at Kyocera Dome.  He could get pushed out of the rotation if he has another bad outing. Orix Buffaloes

Nippon Ham Fighters

  • Five players hit home runs in Wednesday's game against the Softbank Hawks (Shohei Otani, Haruki Nishikawa, Keiji Obiki, Kenji Sato, and Juan Miranda) .  The last time the Fighters hit five in one game was on April 14, 2013 against Orix.  The last time five different Fighters went yard in the same game was on August 4, 2006 against Seibu (Michihiro Ogasawara, Makoto Kaneko, Kensuke Tanaka, Atsunori Inaba, and Hichori Morimoto). ... Nine home runs were hit during Wednesday's game.  The last game game to feature at least nine home runs was between Yomiuri (eight) and Hiroshima (one) on June 29, 2010.  The last Pacific League game was on August 13, 2005 between Lotte (seven) and Orix (four).  The NPB record for home runs in a game is thirteen, set on April 26, 1949 by Daiei (eight) and Kyojin (five); and October 3, 1980 by Lotte (nine) and Kintetsu (four).  Source: Sanspo 4/24/2014, Sponichi 4/24/2014
  • Otani recorded three victories and three home runs in his first year.  He has two wins and one home run so far this year.  He is the first pitcher to record at least one win and one home run in each of his first two seasons since Kenshin Kawakami in 1998 and 1999.  He also joined Masaichi Kaneda (eleven years, 1950-1960), Takao Kajimoto (two years, 1954-1955), Masaaki Ikenaga (five years, 1965-1969), and Tsuneo Horiuchi (nine years, 1966-1974) as the only players out of high school since the start of the two leagues to record two or more consecutive seasons of at least one win and one home run, beginning with their first year. Hiroshima Carp

  • Kila Ka'aihue was taken off the active roster on Wednesday with a spinal concussion (he took an HBP off his back on Tuesday).  The injury does not appear to be serious, but will also take more than three or four days.  Rainel Rosario was called up to take Ka'aihue spot on the roster.   • Takeya Nakamura (back tightness) played in a Ni-gun rehab game against Yakult on Wednesday.  He got the start at first and batted clean-up.  He homered in his second straight game and went 1-for-2 with two walks.  He could be activated in time for the start of a Softbank series that begins on the 25th at YafuOku Dome. Nippon Ham Fighters

  • Dai-Kang Yoh may have hurt his right shoulder while trying to evade a tag at first base after hitting a grounder in the 5th inning of Tuesday's game against Softbank.  He was removed from the game on defense in the 6th. Rakuten Eagles

  • Yuki Matsui had another rough outing on Wednesday and will be sent down to Ni-gun on Thursday for additional instruction and work.  Control has been an issue for Matsui.  He walked twenty-three in 19.1 innings this year. Source: Nikkan Sports 4/23/2014
  • Andruw Jones notched the first walk-off home run of his NPB career in the 12th inning of Tuesday's game against Seibu.  The last Eagle to hit a walk-off home run was Kazuo Matsui on September 24, 2012 against Softbank in the 10th.  Jones was the first player in franchise history to hit a walk-off in the 12th.   • The Hawks turned a triple play (8-2-4) against Nippon Ham on Tuesday, their first since May 5, 1999 vs Orix.  It was the first triple play that went outfielder-catcher-infielder since Yomiuri turned one against Chunichi on August 9, 1997 -- center fielder Hideki Matsui to catcher Shinichi Murata to third baseman Pedro Castellano.   • Yuki Matsui threw about 100 pitches in the bullpen on Monday in preparation for his next start on Wednesday.  Matsui is trying to find stability in his mechanics by improving the way he uses his right foot.  He is also working on pitching from the set position.   • The Hawks are planning to go with a seven-man rotation when they play a stretch of nine consecutive games during the Golden Week break (April 29-May 7).  The two that get added to the current mix of five could be Kazuyuki Hoashi (May 1 vs Orix at Hotto Motto) and Shota Oba (May 5 vs Nippon Ham at YafuOku Dome). [4/21/2014] Nippon Ham Fighters reach agreement with pitcher Anthony Carter

The Nippon Ham Fighters announced that they reached an agreement with twenty-eight-year-old pitcher Anthony Carter.  He has been assigned the number seventy.  According to Sponichi, the deal will run through to the end of the season and will be worth an estimated forty million yen plus bonuses.

Rakuten Eagles

  • Takahiro Norimoto tossed a 12-0 shutout against Nippon Ham on Friday.  He joined Yasuhiro Ichiba (April 7, 2006 vs Lotte, 13-0) and Satoshi Nagai (March 26, 2008 vs Orix, 11-0) as the only pitchers in franchise history to record shutouts in games where the Eagles scored ten or more runs.  He also became the thirteenth pitcher in franchise history to notch a shutout and the first not named Masahiro Tanaka since Yoshinao Kamata on August 16, 2012.  Source: Sanspo 4/19/2014
