Osamu Hamanaka (YAK) to retire after the current season

The media learned on Thursday that Osamu Hamanaka will be retiring after the current season.  Sanspo mentions that the Swallows were thinking about bringing Hamanaka back next season (Sports Hochi notes the opposite), but he apparently felt he was reaching his limits and decided to retire after the season.

Hamanaka was on the opening day active roster after a strong spring.  But after 5 games and just 2 hits over 13 at bats, he was taken off the active roster; he never returned after that.

UPDATE @ 6:08pm - An official announcement was posted at the team site.

This post will be updated throughout the day.

The Ni-gun Swallows have the day off today.

===== 2/10 @ 1:59am

Tomohiro Kuroki will be holding a special 2-day event (from 10am until the end of practice) at a public space located near Urasoe Stadium that will allow people to experience some of the physical tests and training exercises that baseball players go through.  Prizes will also be handed out (like exhibition game tickets and Nike merchandise).

===== 2/9 @ 8:55pm

A number of pitchers, including Yoshinori Sato and Kyohei Muranaka, tossed BP today.

===

Shingo Kawabata and Keizo Kawashima stayed back after general practice for about an hour of extra fielding practice today.  INF / base-running coach Noriyuki Shiroishi worked with the two players.

Said Kawabata, "I can't provide stable defense.  It's getting to the ball I have a problem with, since I think I have a good feel for the ball when I throw it."

And Kawashima, "I have enough elbow strength to keep up.  But following in the footsteps for Shinya Miyamoto at short isn't an easy thing.  I need to work hard at it."

===

The media learned yesterday that Osamu Hamanaka will be batting 4th and starting in left during a practice game against the Hanshin Tigers on the 13th.

The Swallows are hoping that Hamanaka can fill the void in left, since they already have the other two positions penciled in: Norichika Aoki in center (definite) and Wladimir Balentien in right.  Amongst the other players that could be in the running for left other than Hamanaka: players like Yasushi Iihara, Kazuhiro Hatakeyama, Shinichi Takeuchi, and Kazuki Fukuchi.
