  • Hisayoshi Chono was examined at a hospital on Friday and diagnosed with a joint contusion in his right knee. Chono suffered the injury while making a leaping catch during Thursday's game against the Yakult Swallows. Source: Nikkan Sports 8/22/2014

Hanshin Tigers

  • Ryoma Matsuda (right elbow) pitched in a Ni-gun rehab game against Softbank on Wednesday.  He entered the game in the 9th and gave up a run on two hits over an inning of work.  He faced four hitters, walked none, struck out one, and topped out at 152km/h.  If things continue to go smoothly, he could make the active roster in time for the Yomiuri series that begins on the 26th at Tokyo Dome.   • Daiki Enokida (left shoulder) also pitched in the Ni-gun Softbank on Wednesday.  It was his first rehab game.  He entered the game in the 8th and did not allow a run or a hit over an inning of work.  He faced three hitters, threw eight pitches, and topped out at 139km/h. Yomiuri Giants

  • Tomoyuki Sugano (right middle finger) played catch on Thursday for the first time in ten days.  The started at a short distance and slowly expanded out to a maximum of about thirty meters.  He threw the ball seventy times.  He also threw about ten breaking pitches. Source: Sponichi 8/14/2014

Hanshin Tigers

  • Yamato (left side) took outdoor batting practice on Wednesday (sixty swings).  He also participated in a batting practice scrimmage and went 3-for-4: single, infield single, home run.  He faced Tomoyuki Kubota, Hirokazu Shiranita, and Hiroya Shimamoto.  He could play in his first rehab game on the 16th. Yokohama Bay Stars

  • Yoshitomo Tsutsugo was hospitalized on Wednesday after he sustained a concussion and a cervical concussion during Wednesday's game against the Chunichi Dragons.  Tests on Thursday did not reveal any abnormalities.  He will remain in the hospital for one more day.  If he is okay on Friday, he will be discharged and will return to Yokohama.  He was taken off the active roster on Thursday, but could return on the 24th.   • Brad Eldred was in the starting line-up for Wednesday's game against the Hanshin Tigers (in left batting fourth) but was scratched at the last minute.  The substitution may have something to do with the left middle finger he hurt while swinging the bat during Tuesday's game.   • Tsuyoshi Nishioka took seventy-nine swings during batting practice at Naruohama on Wednesday (forty-one from the right side and thirty-eight from left) and hit four over the fence.   • Kazuki Yoshimi (right elbow, lower back) pitched in a Ni-gun rehab game against Hanshin on Wednesday.  He pitched two shutout innings in relief and gave up two hits.  His next Ni-gun outing will come on five days of rest against Softbank.  Wednesday's game was Yoshimi's first game in forty-one days.  With no other setbacks, he could join the active roster in early July.   • Shoichi Ino tweaked his back during his start against the Orix Buffaloes on Wednesday.  His next start could be pushed back to the 21st against Seibu at Yokohama if his back does not improve. Hanshin Tigers

  • Ryoma Matsuda started having problems with his right elbow during spring camp.  The Tigers shut him down and he has yet to start playing catch.  There is currently no timetable on him.  There is a good chance he will miss the first-half of the season.  Source: Daily Sports 4/14/2014

Hiroshima Carp

  • Kenta Maeda is scheduled to play some catch on the 16th.  The Carp will wait to make a decision on him until they have had a chance to see how he is feeling on the 16th.  Source: Sponichi 4/14/2014 ... If Maeda is okay to pitch, he could get a start during a Yokohama series that begins on the 18th.  The 20th, on seven days of rest, is a possibility.  Looking to next week, Kenjiro Nomura is hoping Maeda will be okay for the Yomiuri series that begins on the 25th.  If Maeda needs rest, the Carp could take him off the active roster as late as the 17th without losing him as an option to start the last game of the Yomiuri series on the 27th.  Source: Sponichi 4/14/2014, Sanspo 4/14/2014

Ryoma Matsuda tossed thirty pitches to a squatting catcher today.  He threw fastballs, curves, and sliders.

Matsuda tossed ten pitches to a squatting catcher on the 16th.  Today's session was his second with a squatting catcher.

Shintaro Fujinami threw about twenty pitches to a squatting catcher today.  He mixed in sliders, two-seamers, and change-ups.  He told reporters he was at only about thirty to forty percent.

6th round draft pick Suguru Iwasaki read about Yu Darvish's curve in some materials his coach in college gave to him in his fourth year.  He did not throw the curve a lot while playing college ball, but feels it might come in handy when facing professional hitters.

Takumi Akiyama has been using the stairs at Kotohira-gu Shrine for workouts this off-season.  There are 1,368 steps from the outer path to the inner shrine.  It takes about an hour to do a complete round trip.  Akiyama's workouts include a round trip in the morning, afternoon, and evening.  In between, he does other things like play catch and weight training.
