Hideki Matsui may have taken some indoor batting practice on Friday -- he spent about ten minutes inside the tent set aside for batting practice.  When approached by reporters, he said that they might have been dreaming and that everything he did was part of a plan to lose weight.

Matsui hit balls from the left side for about twenty-five minutes during indoor fielding practice on Friday -- 140 swings at distances of about twenty-five meters and eighteen swings at about sixty meters.

Tuesday was the last day of the first block of spring camp. ... A number of players, including 1st round draft pick Seiji Kobayashi, Daisuke Fujimura, Masaki Sakaguchi, and Itaru Hashimoto, participated in early morning batting practice.  The session lasted about forty minutes.  Players worked on bunts, slash bunts, and hitting the ball to the right side of the field.

Ryosuke Miyaguni tossed batting practice to Taishi Ota on Monday.  Miyaguni threw forty-six pitches and allowed eight could-be hits.  Hideki Matsui has been working with both players during spring camp.

Field Turf Classis HD will be installed at Tokyo Dome.  The last installation took place in March 2007.  The turf will be replaced between March 7 and 18.  The new turf should be ready for the exhibition game on March 21.  It will cost about 300 million yen to install the new turf.

Yomiuri Giants

Ryosuke Miyaguni developed a pain near his right knee and is currently working out separately from the rest of the Ni-gun players.  There is no timetable for when he might be able to return to regular workouts.

Chunichi Dragons

The Dragons announced today that Hirokazu Ibata had surgery on his right ankle on Friday.  There were no complications during the procedure.  He will be discharged from the hospital on the 7th and will need about two months before he can start jogging.

Ibata will also have surgery on his right elbow later this month on 12th.

Doala (left middle finger) successfully turned a backflip (with a twist) after the seventh inning of tonight's game against the Yokohama Bay Stars.

Before the game: "The finger is not completely healed, but I got the green light from the doctor because this is the last game of the season.  I am not at my best, but I will do what I can."

After turning the backflip: "I am so happy!  I am glad I was able to nail it for [Takeshi] Yamasaki.  I am glad I was able to add in a twist."

Hanshin Tigers

Atsushi Nomi resumed playing catch on Friday.  The cut he suffered on his finger during his last start on October 1 appeared to be fine.

Softbank Hawks

Brian Falkenborg was taken off the active roster on Friday with tightness in his neck and back.

"He cannot throw the ball because of pain in his neck and back, so we sent him back to Fukuoka," pitching coach Ikuo Takayama said.

Rakuten Eagles

Manabu Mima was examined at the hospital on Friday after he complained of discomfort in his right elbow.  He was diagnosed with inflammation in the elbow and taken off the active roster today.  He will be allowed to play catch once the swelling goes down.  The Eagles are uncertain if he will be ready for the start of the Final Stage of the Climax Series.

Former chief trainer Hirohisa Hagiwara died of lung cancer at 8:56am on Saturday.  He was sixty-eight.  Hagiwara was a part of the organization between 1978 and 2005.

Ryosuke Miyaguni will likely get the opening day start.  If he does, at twenty years and eleven months, he will be the second youngest pitcher in franchise history to start the first game of the year.  The youngest: Masumi Kuwata in 1988 at twenty years and zero months.

1st round draft pick Tomoyuki Sugano is scheduled to start an exhibition game against Rakuten on the 23rd.  Assuming the same pitching schedule, he could make his first regular season start on the 30th against Hiroshima.

If Sugano makes the start, he will become the first rookie pitcher in franchise history since the introduction of the draft in 1965 to make their first start within the team's first two games of the season.  Koji Uehara (1999), Hiroshi Kisanuki (2003), and Hirokazu Sawamura (2011) hold the current record with starts within the team's first three games of the season.

Before 1965: Yoshiaki Ito (1959) and Kunio Jonouchi (1962) both got opening day starts in their first years.
