The Seibu Lions lost Yasuyuki Kataoka to the Yomiuri Giants and Hideaki Wakui to the Chiba Lotte Marines.  According to a number of reports, the Lions selected infielder Ryota Wakiya (32) from the Giants and pitcher Taiki Nakago (29) from the Marines as part of their free agent compensation packages.  A press conference is scheduled on the 10th.

The Lions were looking for infield help after losing both Kataoka and Esteban German during the off-season.  They signed Cody Ransom, but wanted some insurance in case things did not work out as expected.  They will most likely assign Wakiya the number seven, Kataoka's old number.

Seibu selected Nakago to bolster their bullpen.  He will most likely be given the number thirty-nine.

Tatsunori Hara told reporters that Ryosuke Miyaguni was still a candidate to make the opening day roster despite giving up four runs on eight hits over 4.1 innings of work during today's exhibition game start against the Chunichi Dragons.

===

Ryota Wakiya threw twenty baseballs into a net during workouts at Giants Stadium today.  It was the first time he threw the ball since having surgery on his right elbow.

===

Hara took Hayato Sakamoto to the bullpen before Wednesday's game against the Orix Buffaloes and spent about thirty minutes giving him help on his swing.  Whether or not the session with Hara actually helped, who knows, but Sakamoto did managed to collect his first hit in twenty-two trips to the plate: a two-runner homer to left in the 6th inning.

Hayato Sakamoto wants to steal at least 20 bases in 2011.

Ryota Wakiya has his eyes on a batting average over .300, 30+ stolen bases, and 30+ sac hits.

DYK: Eishin Soyogi (HIR) became the first player in NPB history to accomplish the feat this season: .306 AVG, 43 SB, 36 SH.

Alex Ramirez apparently wants a new phrase to say during his hero interviews in 2011.  This season, he used the phrase "Yorokonde!"

Ramirez is currently trying to find ideas via the Internet and various comedy sketches while spending the winter in his home in Florida.

Yomiuri Giants: Hara spends quality time with the youngsters

by on Oct.11, 2010 @ 10:05 pm, under NPB
Tags: , , , ,

Tatsunori Hara spent time working closely with Hisayoshi Chono, Hayato Sakamoto, and Ryota Wakiya during practice today at Giants Stadium.  Hara spent about 30 minutes tossing BP to Wakiya while giving him advice on everything from bunting to his batting stance.  After that, he hit baseballs to Chono, Sakamoto, and Wakiya in the outfield.

Some more details from Sanspo (10/12): seems Hara spent about 50 minutes working with Chono behind closed doors (hitting instruction).  He then had Sakamoto and Wakiya join in and spent another hour and a half working with all three players.  After full squad practice, Hara had the same three players stay after to flag down fly balls between left and right field (they each had to handle 6 fly balls).

In other team news:

It seems the Yomiuri Giants will be using a combination of Marc Kroon, Tetsuya Yamaguchi, Daisuke Ochi, and Yuya Kubo to close out games during the Climax Series.  In others words, the Giants won't live and die with Kroon as closer -- if he isn't pitching well, they'll quickly replace him with one of the other three and go from there.

Kroon's stock as a closer has been in gradual decline over the course of the current season.  And while it appeared as though he might be coming out of his funk in September (10 G, 1.64 ERA, 11 IP, 18 SO, 0.91 WHIP), things sort of blew up for him in October (3 G, 13.50 ERA, 2 IP, 4 SO, 3.50 WHIP).

Incidentally, Kroon told reporters that he wanted to continue playing next year, be it with the Giants, or with another team (although his first choice would be to return to Yomiouri).

Wakiya extends runs scored streak to 14 straight games

Ryota Wakiya hit a home run in his final at bat in the 9th inning last night against the Hanshin Tigers.  That extended his consecutive games with at least one run scored to 14 and tied the Central League mark set by Takao Sato back in 1952.

Said Wakiya, "Records are records. I'm not really thinking about it. And besides, the team lost."

Next up on the list: Michihiro Ogasawara's PL (and NPB) mark of 17 games that was set back in 2001.
