The Yakult Swallows officially announced today that Kazuki Fukuchi and Ryuji Miyade will be retiring after the season.

Statement to fans from Fukuchi:

To Yakult Swallows fans and others,

This is Kazuki Fukuchi of the Yakult Swallows.

I have played on Hiroshima, Seibu, and Yakult during my nineteen-year career.  I have struggled with injuries over the last few years and my body is no longer moving in ways that I would like it to.  After much thought, I decided to retire.

I have no regrets about pushing myself to the limits over these last nineteen years.

My only strength is speed and the only reason I was able to play for this long, is because I had support from the fans, team personnel, the manager, coaches, players, team staff, and my family.

I am full of feelings of appreciate for everyone that has helped me up to now.

Thank you very much.

The Swallows did approach me about a retirement game.

However, I have decided to accept just their feelings because in my mind, I feel retirement games also mark the end of a player's career and since the is such an important time during the season, with the Climax Series still ahead of us, I decided to turn down the offer.

Lastly, I  would like to ask for your continued support as I want to work hard as a member of this team to win the Nippon Series and bring happiness we can all share.

Statement to fans from Miyade:

To Yakult Swallows fans and others,

This is Ryuji Miyade of the Yakult Swalows.

It will be retiring at the end of the a seventeen-year career.

Two years ago, I was released from the Rakuten Eagles and I was thinking about retiring from the game I once loved so much.  But Junji Ogawa and other Yakult staff gave me one more chance.

I worked hard for the sake of the team, but I feel I am on the decline and the younger players are stepping up.  I have decide to take the uniform off.

There was discussion about a retirement game, but with the team heading for the Climax Series, I declined the suggestion because I want to play straight through without losing emotional momentum.

I did happily accept their kind words though.

I am really just filled with feelings of appreciation.  I want to thank the fans, the manager, the staff, and my teammates.

I will do my best to the very end, so that we can win the Nippon Series and so that I can continue to play baseball with my teammates for as long as possible.

The Yakult Swallows are working towards reacquiring Rakuten Eagles' senryokugai player Ryuji Miyade.  Miyada was sent to the Eagles before the 2009 season for Yasuhiro Ichiba and struggled a little this past season.  The Swallows like Miyade because he's a right-handed bat and because he can also play a number of positions (OF, 1B, 3B).

An official announcement will likely be made within the next few days.

...Hisashi Kitani struck out 5 batters in one inning during a Ni-gun game against Nippon Ham today.  It happened in the 7th inning when Kitani threw three wild pitches in the inning.

...Ryuji Miyade earned his domestic FA option on Saturday with 8 years of service time.

1:23pm JST

...Hisashi Iwakuma is pitching against Yu Darvish today.  This will be the second time the two pitch face  each other this season (the first game went to Iwakuma).

...It seems Takeshi Yamasaki might be benched during Inter-league games where the DH-rule is not in place.  Said Marty Brown, "He'd play first, but corner players need to hit.  This is something I'll be discussing with him."  Brown has been pretty faithful to Yamasaki so far this year, despite his struggles at the plate (29-for-140, .207 / .268 / .343 / .611).

...It took the Eagles 6 hours to get to Hakodate from Sendai (1 hour delay) because of some problems with the train tracks.

...Yusuke Inoue was apparently placed on the active roster todayShingo Matsuzaki and Yosuke Hiraishi are also said to be traveling with the team.

NPB: Ichiba traded to Swallows for Miyade; and more

...Tomoaki Kanemoto and Takahiro Arai were practicing at the indoor training facilities near Koshien Stadium on Monday. Both players should be in the line-up against the Softbank Hawks on Tuesday.

Tsuyoshi Shimoyanagi is scheduled to start that game.

...With only 10 days left before the start of the season, there's a chance Akihiro Yano may not be ready. He was originally scheduled to join the team with Arai, Kanemoto, and Shimoyanagi, but is still working on preparing himself.

...Hiroyasu Ichiba (SP) was traded to the Yakult Swallows for Ryuji Miyade (OF).

Methinks this trade will end up helping the Swallows more than it does the Eagles (at least in the long run). Ichiba is a 26 year-old righty with a lot of up-side and it gives the Swallows another young pitcher for the rotation.

Said Nomura, "I thought a change of scenery would be good for him. Especially since I think he's capable of becoming a good pitcher."

...Takahiro Suzuki will be the starting centerfielder and bat lead-off on Opening Day for the Giants.

...Eri Yoshida will not be making her scheduled appearance on the 24th against the Kishu Rangers due to pain in her right shoulder.
