The NPB released results from their annual player survey on careers after baseball.

  • 238 players from all twelve NPB teams participated in the survey.
  • Average age: 23.7 years old (18-35 years of age)
    • 18-22: 96 players (40.3 percent)
    • 23-26: 98 players (41.2 percent)
    • 27-29: 34 players (14.3 percent)
    • 30+: 10 players (4.2 percent)
  • Average number of playing years: 3.5 years (1-13 years)
  • Background before joining the NPB:
    • high school: 45 percent
    • college: 30 percent
    • employee/industrial league: 22 percent
    • other: 3 percent
  • Average salary in 2015: 9,000,000 yen
  • Single/Married: 76 percent/24 percent
  • Positions:
    • pitchers: 47 percent
    • catchers: 12 percent
    • infielders: 22 percent
    • outfielders: 19 percent
  • 72.7 percent of players are worried about their lives after retirement (up from 69.3 percent last year).  Most were worried about their income (44.5 percent) and future (43.8 percent).
  • The top five jobs players might be interested in after retirement:
    1. high school coach: 72 percent
    2. university, industrial league coach: 64 percent
    3. company employee: 63 percent
    4. scout, advance scout: 59 percent
    5. pro yakyu coach / instructor at baseball academy: 58 percent

The NPB released results from their annual player survey on second careers earlier today.

  • 244 players from all twelve NPB teams participated in the survey.
  • Average age: 23.9 years old (18-32 years of age)
    • 18-22: 81 players (33 percent)
    • 23-26: 114 players (47 percent)
    • 27-29: 42 players (17 percent)
    • 30+: 7 players (3 percent)
  • Average number of playing years: 3.9 years (1-14 years)
  • Background before turning pro:
    • high school: 53 percent
    • college: 26 percent
    • employee/industrial league: 19 percent
    • other: 2 percent
  • Average salary: 9,550,000 yen
  • Single/Married Percent: 74 percent/26 percent
  • Positions:
    • pitchers: 45 percent
    • catchers: 14 percent
    • infielders: 22 percent
    • outfielders: 19 percent
  • 69.3 percent of players are worried about their lives after retirement (down from 73.9 percent last year).  Most were worried about their income (45.6 percent) and future (42.7 percent).
  • The top five jobs players might be interested in after retirement:
    1. high school coach: 75 percent
    2. university, industrial league coach: 64 percent
    3. pro yakyu coach: 60 percent
    4. scout, advance scout: 56 percent
    5. instructor at baseball academy: 55 percent

The NPB released results from their annual player survey on second careers on Thursday.  Some of the numbers:

  • 239 players from all twelve NPB teams participated in the survey.
  • Average age: 23.4 years old
    • 18-24: 94 players
    • 23-26: 112 players
    • 27-29: 31 players
    • 30+: 2 players
  • Average number of playing years: 3.4 years
  • Background before turning pro:
    • high school: 53.4 percent
    • specialty school: 0.9 percent
    • college: 28.0 percent
    • employee/industrial league: 15.9 percent
    • other: 1.7 percent
  • Average salary: 9,446,000 yen
  • Single/Married Percent: 80.6 percent/19.4 percent
  • 73.9 percent of players are worried about their lives after retirement (up from 71.5 percent last year).  Most were worried about their income (47.4 percent) and their futures (43.1 percent).
  • The top five jobs that players wanted to try after retirement:
    1. high school coach - 19.5 percent (up from 15.0 percent)
    2. pro yakyu coach - 16.8 percent (up from 13.5 percent)
    3. university, industrial league coach - 16.1 percent (up from 8.6 percent)
    4. employee at a general company - 9.4 percent (up from 6.1 percent)
    5. overseas baseball - 8.7 percent (up from 6.7 percent)

The NPB released results from their annual player survey on second careers.  Some of the numbers:

  • 246 players from all 12 NPB teams participated in the survey.  Average age: 23.7.  Average number of playing years: 3.9.
  • 71.5% of players are worried about their lives after retirement (up from 70% last year).  Most were worried about what they were going to do next (46.7%) and salary (44.5%).
  • The top five jobs that players wanted to try after retirement:
    1. restaurant owner - 17.8% (up from 13.0%)
    2. high school coach - 15.0% (down from 28.4%)
    3. pro yakyu coach - 13.5% (up from 8.6%)
    4. university, industrial league coach - 8.6% (down from 11.7%)
    5. advanced scout / scout - 8.0% (down from 11.1%)

Note: the NPB explains the sudden drop in players with interest in becoming high school coaches to a change in wording. The latest survery reflects the new rules for becoming a high school coach and players may have been confused by the changes to the question -- the option changed from "High School Coach" to "Get a teaching license, coach baseball."

The NPB released the results of the player survey on second careers.  Some of the numbers:

  • 223 players from all 12 NPB teams participated in the survey.  Average age: 23.7.  Average number of playing years: 3.4.
  • 70% of players are worried about their lives after retirement (down from 74% last year).  Most were worried about what they were going to do next (43.4%) and salary (43%).
  • The top five jobs that players wanted to try after retirement:
    1. high school coach - 28.4% (up from 26%)
    2. restaurant owner - 13%
    3. university, industrial league coach - 11.7% (up from 10%)
    4. advanced scout / scout - 11.1%
    5. pro yakyu coach - 8.6%
  • 64.3% of players said they had savings, 10.3% said they had none, and 25.4% said they were not sure.
  • Of those that had savings:
    • 31.6% up to 5M yen
    • 23.7% between 10M and 20M yen
    • 19.7% between 30M and 50M yen
    • 6.6% more than 50M yen
