Rakuten Eagles

  • Ginji (lower back) worked out at the Ni-gun facilities in Sendai on Wednesday.  He resumed soft-toss batting practice a few days ago.  There is still no timetable on when he will play his first rehab game. Source: Sponichi 6/4/2014

  • The Lions announced on Tuesday that tests conducted on Hideto Asamura's left knee on Monday did not reveal any problems. Source: Sanspo 6/4/2014 ... Softbank Hawks

  • Hayato Terahara (right knee) began his rehab at the Saitozaki facilities on Wednesday.  His day included trunk strengthening exercises and getting treatment for the knee.  He will require the use of crutches for about a week.  His goal right now is to be ready to pitch during spring camp next year.   • Seiichi Uchikawa (right gluteus maximus) resumed soft-toss batting practice on Tuesday.  He swung the bat at about eighty percent.  He hopes to be running sprints before the end of the week.  He would like to be ready on defense as well, but that may not be a top priority.   • Toru Hosokawa was taken off the active roster on Wednesday after he fouled a ball off his left knee on Tuesday.  He is currently unable to squat. Source: Sponichi 6/4/2014

Nippon Ham Fighters

  • Shohei Otani hurt his left ankle when he slid into home plate on a close play in the 5th inning of Wednesday's game against Hiroshima.  He was removed from the game and the ankle was treated with ice.   He was also examined by the team doctor and diagnosed with a mild sprain in a lateral ankle ligament.   • Atsunori Inaba (left knee) could play in his first Ni-gun rehab game during an upcoming three-game series against Yomiuri that begins on the 10th.  He took thirty-nine swings during batting practice with the Ichi-gun team on Tuesday and hit three over the fence. Source: Nikkan Sports 6/4/2014

Softbank Hawks

  • Tadashi Settsu (right shoulder) joined the Ichi-gun team for workouts on Saturday.  He is currently scheduled to start a game against Yomiuri at YafuOku Dome on June 4. Source: Sanspo 5/31/2014
  • Seiichi Uchikawa (right gluteus maximus) is hoping to return to the active roster before the end of Inter-league play.  Some time around June 16 is a possibility if there are no setbacks. Source: Daily Sports 5/31/2014 ... There is no timetable on when Uchikawa might be able to start running workouts.  Depending on how things go, he might not be able to return to the active roster until after the regular season resumes on June 27. There is a chance Uchikawa could return during Inter-league play, since the Hawks are currently scheduled to play their last four games on the road against Yakult (June 17, 19) and Yomiuri (June 21, 22).  Since the games are at Central League stadiums, the designated hitter rule will be in effect.   • Toshiya Sugiuchi worked out at Koshien Stadium on Friday.  He took a batted ball off the area above his left knee during his last start on the 26th.  He told reporters he was fine.  Sugiuchi is scheduled to start Sunday's game against the Orix Buffaloes at Kyocera Dome. Hiroshima Carp

  • Kam Mickolio pitched in a Ni-gun rehab game against Orix on Friday.  He entered the game in the 6th and gave up a run on two hits over an inning of work (1B9-WP-R, 1B9 one RBI, K, K, G6).  He also struck out two and walked none. Source: Daily Sports 5/30/2014

Chunichi Dragons

  • Motonobu Tanishige tweaked his left leg during Monday's game against the Softbank Hawks.  He did not play on Wednesday and Thursday.  He worked out at Seibu Dome on Friday and told reporters he had not yet made a decision on his status. Source: Sports Hochi 5/30/2014
  • Takuya Asao (right elbow) pitched in a Ni-gun game against Hiroshima on Thursday.  He entered the game in the 9th and did not allow a run or a hit over an inning of work.  He threw thirteen pitches and topped out at 144km/h.  The Dragons have decided to wait on Asao a little longer since he is not an immediate need. Rakuten Eagles

  • Kevin Youkilis might be able to resume practices in about two months.  Youkilis was diagnosed with plantar fasciitis in his left foot while he was in Japan. Softbank Hawks

[5/26/2014] Softbank Hawks: Seiichi Uchikawa re-aggravates glute injury

Seiichi Uchikawa was examined at a hospital in Fukuoka today and diagnosed with a strain in his right gluteus maximus muscle.  Uchikawa re-aggravated the injury while running to first on a grounder to third in the 6th inning of a game against Hanshin on the 23rd.  He will require about ten days of rest.  He was taken off the active roster today and will be eligible to return on June 5.

Yakult Swallows

  • Orlando Roman was taken off the active roster on Saturday with discomfort in his right elbow.  He is scheduled to have the elbow examined at a hospital within the next few days.   • 3rd round draft pick Takuya Toyoda was removed from Saturday's game against Yakult after he took a batted ball off his right hand.  With runners on first and second and no out in the 8th, Yakult's Wataru Hiyane hit a ball that struck Toyoda in the right hand.  It does not appear to be serious (bruise) at this point, but could still keep him out of a few games. Softbank Hawks

  • Seiichi Uchikawa was left out of the starting line-up on Saturday because of pain near his right buttock.  He did not participate in pre-game practices on the field. Uchikawa will not be with the team for their series against Chunichi at Nagoya Dome.  He will stay back in Fukuoka and get checked out at a hospital on the 26th.  Assuming everything is okay, he will rejoin the team for the Yokohama series that begins on the 28th.   • Tadashi Settsu (right shoulder) tossed eighty pitches in the bullpen on Thursday.  He will most likely toss another session on the 26th.  He told reporters he still felt some tightness from the session, but was otherwise fine.  He could pitch in a Ni-gun rehab game during an upcoming Hanshin series that begins on the 27th.  If there are no setbacks, he could return to the active roster in June. Yomiuri Giants

  • Daisuke Nakai is no longer having problems with his right elbow and was added to the active roster on Friday.  He started playing rehab games as a designated hitter in late-March and took to playing left earlier this month.  In thirty-four Ni-gun games, he went 33-for-105 with seven home runs and twenty RBI (.314/.365/.581).   • Hirokazu Sawamura's (right shoulder) next Ni-gun rehab game will likely come on the 27th against Yakult.  He is scheduled to go three innings.  He could return to the active roster some time in June. Source: Nikkan Sports 5/23/2014

  • Shinobu Fukuhara (right adductor) is scheduled to pitch in a batting practice scrimmage at Naruohama on Saturday.  Fukuhara could be close to a return to the active roster.  Depending on how he is feeling on Sunday, he could make it back to the active roster as early as the 25th against Lotte.  If he wants a little more time, he could also pitch in a Ni-gun rehab game against Softbank on the 27th. Orix Buffaloes

  • With a runner on first and no out in the 8th on Friday's game against Hiroshima, Eishin Soyogi hit a pop-up in the infield.  Third baseman Esteban German and catcher Hikaru Ito collided in an attempt to catch the ball.  German had a hard time getting up and was taken out of the game.  According to the Buffaloes, he had a cut on his chin that required five stitches.  He is a question mark for Saturday's game.   • Hiroki Uemoto (right thumb) played in a batting practice scrimmage at Naruohama on Friday.  He went 1-for-2: walk on five pitches, fly out to right on the second pitch, single to left on 1-1 fastball.  He also took fielding practice at second base.   • Kenta Maeda took a ball hit by Shinnosuke Abe off his right thigh with a runner on first and two out in the 6th inning of Saturday's game against the Yomiuri Giants.  He managed to complete the play at first for the final out of the inning, but had to helped off the field.  He was replaced by a pinch-hitter in the 7th.  The Carp will wait to see how Maeda is feeling on Sunday before deciding what steps to take next.   • Akihito Fujii hurt his right leg during Friday's game against Yokohama.  He hit a ball off the left field wall in the 5th inning and was replaced by a pinch-runner after he tweaked his leg while rounding first.  He was taken to a hospital in Yokohama for an examination.   • Tomoyuki Sugano took two batted balls off his right hand during Wednesday's game against Yakult.  He had the wrist taped for practices on Thursday.  He told reporters he was fine and felt less pain than Wednesday.  Source: Sponichi 4/17/2014

  • Kenta Maeda (right elbow) threw the ball seventy times on Wednesday.  Source: Sports Hochi 4/17/2014, Daily Sports 4/17/2014 ... [12/16/2013] Softbank Hawks sign Seiichi Uchikawa to a new four-year contract

Seiichi Uchikawa was in the third year of a four-year contract this season.  He met with the Softbank Hawks today for salary negotiations and replaced the fourth year with a new a four-year deal (he was set to re-earn his FA option after next season).  The value of the contract will change based on performance.  His salary next year will be 270 million yen plus incentives (up 100 million from this past season).
