Yomiuri Giants

  • Hirokazu Sawamura (right shoulder) threw fifty pitches to Yoshiyuki Kamei (right index finger) during batting practice at Giants Stadium on Saturday.  Kamei swung the bat thirty times and recorded ten could-be hits and hit two over the wall in right. Source: Nikkan Sport 5/10/2014

Hanshin Tigers

  • Tomoyuki Kubota pitched in a batting practice scrimmage at Naruohama on Saturday for the first time since he had surgery on his right elbow in February.  He faced Fumiya Araki, Hisashi Takayama, and Fumihito Haraguchi (twice each).  He gave up two hits and struck out one. Hiroshima Carp

  • Kam Mickolio was taken off the active roster on Saturday with pain in his left adductor muscle.  He is scheduled for an examination. Source: Sports Hochi 5/10/2014

Chunichi Dragons

  • Kazuhiro Wada started feeling something in his back during his first at bat in Saturday's game against the Hiroshima Carp.  He was later replaced on defense in the 3rd inning as a precaution.  His status on Sunday will depend on how he is feeling. Source: Sports Hochi 5/10/2014

Yasuhiro Ogawa tossed one splitter during his bullpen session on Saturday.  He got tips on how to throw the pitch when he worked out with Koji Uehara in January.  He also threw the cutter he learned from Yu Darvish. ... [4/19/2013] Injury Updates: Yuhei, Kawabata (Yakult); Aranami (Yokohama); Nomoto (Chunichi)

Yuhei Takai was diagnosed with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.  There is a chance he will require surgery and may not be able to return this season.

Shingo Kawabata will have surgery to remove a bone fragment in his left ankle on the 22nd.  It may be about two months before he can play again.

Sho Aranami (Yokohama) was examined at a hospital in Yokohama and diagnosed depressed fracture in his right cheekbone.  He was removed from the active roster today and will go under the knife on the 22nd.

The Chunichi Dragons announced today that Kei Nomoto was diagnosed with a fissured fracture in his right third rib after an evaluation at a hospital in Nagoya.  He will likely require about six weeks for a full recovery.  Nomoto suffered the injury during a Ni-gun game against Hanshin on the 17th.

Yakult Swallows: Kawabata to miss three to four weeks with muscle strain

Shingo Kawabata was evaluated at a hospital in Urasoe, Okinawa today and diagnosed with a strain in his erector spinae muscle.  He will require three to four weeks for a full recovery.

Kawabata suffered the injury during practice on Sunday.

"I has settled down quite a bit since yesterday.  I was also worried about my left ankle, so now I can work on both.  I may as well take the good out of the situation," said Kawabata.

Kawabata will rehab at Ni-gun camp in Saito, Miyazaki.

Shingo Kawabata made the following deal with his sister Yuki Kawabata (JWBL player): if she plays in every one of her games and he does not, then he will buy her anything she wants, including a car; if he plays in every game and she does not, then she owes him a free meal.

Kawabata ordered some 920 gram bats (up ten grams from last year).

Yakult Swallows: Shingo Kawabata diagnosed with left eversion sprain

Shingo Kawabata hurt his left ankle during fall workouts and was taken to the hospital on Thursday where he was diagnosed with an eversion sprain.  He will likely require two to three weeks for a full recovery.  He will not be attending fall camp in Matsuyama.

Kawabata suffered the injury when he twisted his left foot after it got caught in a seam in the artificial turf  during fielding practices.

Shingo Kawabata could end up batting fifth and starting at short during the season this year.

The Swallows finished exhibition play with the best record for the first time in forty-one years.

Masanori Ishikawa started a Ni-gun game against Nippon Ham on Saturday and gave up a run on two hits over five innings of work.  He also threw fifty-seven pitches and struck out eight.

Shohei Tateyama is scheduled to pitch in a Ni-gun game against Lotte on March 28 before making his first start of the regular season during a three game series against the Hanshin Tigers (at Jingu) that begins on April 3.

Since Masanori Ishikawa's start was rained out today, he will get to pitch in a Ni-gun game against Nippon Ham at Toda on Saturday.  Kyohei Muranaka will start Saturday's exhibition game against the Seibu Lions.

Shingo Kawabata joined the Ichi-gun team today and is scheduled to play in Saturday's game against the Seibu Lions (Jingu).

Junji Ogawa told reporters today that Chang-Yong Lim will be sent down to Ni-gun to continue his preparations for the season -- they do not want to rush him.  This also leaves open the possibility that Lim starts the season at Ni-gun, which could be good news for players like Wladimir Balentien and Orlando Roman, since the two were competing for the last remaining foreign player roster spot.

The first three pitchers in the starting rotation will likely be: Ishikawa, Muranaka, and Katsuki Akagawa.

The Swallows announced the start of the Shinya Miyamoto 2,000 Hit Support Project today.

And when Miyamoto records his 2,000th hit, the Swallows plan to celebrate by giving fans with the names "Miyamoto" or "Shinya" and fans in their forties or with the number six in their age a discount on tickets to the 2,000th Hit Commemorative Game -- 3,000 yen reserved seat A tickets on the first base side will be priced at 2,000 yen.

Yakult Swallows: March 22, 2012

Shingo Kawabata is scheduled to rejoin the Ichi-gun team on Friday.

The Swallows attended a pep rally at Meiji Kinenkan on Thursday.  About 500 people attended.

The new members of the cheer-leading group, Passion, in addition to their new uniforms, were also introduced and unveiled.

Yakult held a general stockholder's meeting on Thursday and approved a number of personnel changes, which included both Tadashi Suzuki (advisor) and Katsutoshi Oki (executive director) stepping down from their posts.  Junsei Atarashi will take on Oki's position as chief of team operations.

===

Orlando Roman has not allowed a run over his last sixteen innings of work.  Wladimir Balentien's bat is also beginning to show signs of life: in his last five games he is 8-for-18 with two homers and seven RBI.

And with both players doing well, Nikkan Sports mentions that the Swallows might actually opt to demote Chang-Yong Lim.  In either case, the three players have three more exhibition games to prove they belong on the active roster.

Wladimir Balentien showed up to practice at Jingu on Monday with his hair shaved down and said to reporters, "I do not care about my hair.  I just want to focus on what I need to do."

Junji Ogawa told reporters on Monday that Shingo Kawabata could return to Ichi-gun as early as March 23.  His return will largely depend on how well he plays during a three-game Ni-gun series against the Yokohama Bay Stars (March 20-22).
