The Tigers like how Development Coach Masayuki Kakefu handled players like Hayata Ito and Issei Morita during fall camp.  They want him to help out at Ni-gun, but could still assign him to Ichi-gun spring camp depending on where players he worked with during fall camp go.

R. Arai took eighty-two swings during batting practice on Saturday and hit four over the fence.

Hitting Coordinator Masayuki Kakefu spent about an hour working with Hayata Ito on his swing after general practices, back at the team hotel.

Pitching coach Kiyooki Nakanishi spent about thirty minutes working with Shintaro Fujinami on his pitching mechanics.  A rubber tube was laid out in a straight line, perpendicular to a net.  Fujinami stood on top of the tube at one end and threw into the net on the other end, each time making sure his left foot landed near the tube.  Nakanishi sat on the ground directly behind him.

Fujinami has been throwing pitches across his body (when the left foot of a right-handed pitcher lands toward third).  Nakanishi explained that this was happening because Fujinami was bending his right knee and allowing his weight to move toward third; his right foot was also placed at an angle against the rubber that made him throw across his body even more.  The solution: to use the adductor muscles more and to place his right foot parallel to the rubber.

Fujinami threw sixty-four baseballs into the net.

Source: Daily Sports 11/3/2013

In an effort to keep the changes minimal, Kiyooki focused on just the right leg -- position of the right leg (making sure the right foot is parallel to the rubber) and usage (making sure the weight does not move toward third).

Exercises like this will be done once every other day during fall camp.

Ryosuke Ogata showed off his strong throwing arm during fielding practices on Saturday.  Ogata is still a little slow on the transfer, but the Tigers believe he could be a candidate for the outfield next year.

Ogata also has speed and has good bat control (he likes to choke up on the bat).

Source: Daily Sports 11/3/2013

Ogata can run the fifty meter in 5.8 seconds and can throw the ball 120 meters.

Hanshin Tigers

Akihito Fujii (right calf bruise) resumed outdoor batting practice on Friday.  He took forty-eight swings and collected fourteen could-be hits.  He also chased some baseballs in the outfield.  He is scheduled to play in a Ni-gun rehab game on the 22nd against Orix.  He could return to the active roster as early as the 24th (vs Yokohama at Koshien).

Yamato (right pinky fracture) could play in his first rehab game later this month.  There are four Ni-gun games remaining at Naruohama: practice game against Orix on the 26th, games against Softank on the 28th and 29th, and a practice game against Panasonic (Industrial League) on October 2.  He could also play in a few Phoenix League games (begins October 7).  His goal right now is to make it back to the active roster in time for the Climax Series.

He is already playing catch, taking fielding practice, running the bases, and taking batting practice against a machine that throw curves.

Shinta Hifumi wants to participate in the Phoenix League that begins on October 7.

Hifumi suffered an avulsion fracture in his left third cuneiform bone when he crashed into a fence while going after a foul ball during a Ni-gun game against Chunichi on July 14.  His cast has since been removed and he is playing catch outdoors.  He has also started to do some jogging.  On Friday, he resumed live indoor batting practice and is close to swinging the bat at full strength.  Assuming no setbacks, he might be ready to play during the second-half of the Pheonix League.

Nippon Ham Fighters

Sho Nakata joined the Ichi-gun team on Saturday.  He was examined on Friday but did not get the green light to resume batting practice because the fracture in his left pinky has not yet fully healed.  The team should have a better idea of when he will be able to return after his next examination on the 25th.

Seibu Lions

Yusei Kikuchi (left shoulder) pitched in a Ni-gun game against Yakult on Saturday.  He tossed two innings in relief and gave up a run on two hits.  He also walked one, hit one, and struck out two.

The Lions are not planning to call Kikuchi up right away.
