Bullpen Sessions / Batting Practice

Saturday

  • Tadashi Settsu threw about seventy pitches in the bullpen with someone standing in the batter's box. (Nikkan Sports)

===

Sho Iwasaki spent some time shadow pitching with his left arm on Friday after Koji Akiyama suggested he give it a try as a way to improve his balance, like Yu Darvish.  Akiyama had Iwasaki use a training bat for weight (kind of swinging it like a tennis racket).

===

The Softbank Hawks may be leaning towards signing Juan Carlos Paniagua, not as an Ikusei player, but as a regular 70-man roster player -- he pitched well during a practice game against Doosan (KBO) on Friday.  The Hawks also like Wanel Mesa, but at twenty-five years of age, they appear to be a little concerned about his ceiling.

===

Nikkan Sports mentions that Brad Penny's girlfriend, Rachelle Leah, is in Japan.

Penny's personal trainer, Matt Klein (sp?), told reporters on Friday that Penny wakes up at 5am everyday and workouts for about an hour, beginning at 5:30am.  He also spends time training in the evenings after returning to the player hotel.

===

Sho Iwasaki told reporters on Saturday that Yu Darvish (HAM) taught him how to throw a slider with vertical movement during their workouts in Miyazaki this year.  He also went from 76kg (end of last season) to his current 84kg.

FYI: the slider is apparently thrown in much the same way a football is thrown.

Today's intra-squad game:

Anthony Lerew did not allow a run over 2 innings of work.  He did give up a hit and topped out at 148km/h.

Yuki Yanagita hit a home run to left off Sho Iwasaki in the 5th inning.

===== 2/19 @ 9:54pm

Keisuke Katto (right elbow pain) joined the rehab ground in Fukuoka today.  Katto had the elbow checked out in a Fukuoka hospital yesterday, but tests did were not conclusive.  Pitching coach Ikuo Takayama told reporters the club will probably have Katto go to a couple of other hospitals for second opinions before making any decisions.

===== 2/19 @ 3:49pm

===

Nobuhiko Matsunaka met with the Hawks' front office and agreed to a salary of 200M yen (down 200M yen) plus incentives for the 2011 season.  The 200M yen pay cut Matsunaka got is the biggest pay cut in NPB history, breaking Atsuya Furuta's cut of 180M yen before the 2007 season.  Matsunaka will be in the 6th year of a 7-year deal next season.

FYI: Matsunaka's 7-year contract called for a set salary of 500M yen over the first 4 years and then a variable salary beginning in year five.

Sho Iwasaki returned from the winter leagues in Puerto Rico on the 25th.  Iwasaki played for the Criollos de Caguas for 2 months and won an MVP with the following pitching line: 8-1, 3.19 ERA, 19 G, 9 GS, 1 CG, 53.2 IP, 57 H, 21 R, 19 ER, 40 SO.  He was also asked to stay by the Criollos' GM after the team made the playoffs.  And while Iwasaki originally had plans to work out in Miyazaki in January, it seems there's now a chance he might return to Puerto Rico for the playoffs.

And the Hawks apparently don't mind if Iwasaki goes back, and are even willing to provide him with whatever support the might need, but only after he gets the proper permission from the player's union.

If Criollos does well and manages to play well, it's possible they could also advance to the Caribbean Series, and that means Iwasaki could be gone until February.
