Shogo Akiyama set a new NPB record in tonight's game against Orix by recording his 215th hit of the year. The milestone hit came in the top of the 6th inning off Bryan Bullington with the bases empty and one out.

As of this post, the game is still in the bottom of the 8th. Akiyama will be the first batter up in the 9th.

[UPDATE @ 9:15pm]

Akiyama picked up another hit in the 9th: he led off the inning with a triple to left-center.

With the game now over, Akiyama finished the season with 216 hits.

[UPDATE 10/2 @ 7:41am]

Of the 215 hits Akiyama recorded this season, eighteen were infield hits. Matt Murton recorded nineteen in 2010 and Ichiro thirty-three in 1994.

Akiyama told reporters he received a congratulatory e-mail from Murton after he went 5-for-5 on September 30.

Akiyama wrote in a kindergarten graduation essay that he wanted to become a baseball player and record hits like Ichiro.
