The Rakuten Eagles announced on Friday that former 6th round draft pick Shoji Ohiro is retiring.  Ohiro will remain with the team as a part of their staff.

Ohiro's comments: To the manager, coaches, my teammates, friends, and family.  I am grateful to everyone that has provided me with support over the years.  Thank you very much.  And to the passionate fans, thank you for your warm cheers.  From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

UPDATE 11/19 @ 7:02am - Ohiro took a thrown ball off his right cheek during practice on 6/17 that degraded his vision.  He apparently decided to retire because he felt his vision was not improving.

Akinori Iwamura plans on visiting Masamune Date's grave as part of a ritual to mark the start of his new career in Sendai.  Iwamura told reporters that he wanted to help teach people the connection the Date clan with his hometown Uwajima, Ehime -- Masamune's son (by way of a concubine) ruled Uwajima domain when his father passed it on to him.

28-year-old Shoji Ohiro and his 27-year-old wife Aya held a wedding ceremony on Sunday in Sendai.  In addition to teammates Teppei, Tatsuya Shiokawa, Yosuke Hiraishi, Hisashi Kitani, and Hiroki Yamamura, Ohiro also invited some of his high school teammates (Kiryu Diaichi HS) from 1999 (when they won the Koshien).

Senichi Hoshino made his "managerial debut" with the Rakuten Eagles at yesterday's intra-squad game at Kleenex Stadium.

Shoji Ohiro started at first and batted fourth during yesterday's intra-squad game at Kleenex Stadium.  In the 6th inning, Ohiro blasted a solo homer to left off Shingo Matsuzaki.

Masafumi Togano gave up a run over 3 innings of work and topped out at 137km/h.

The Rakuten Eagles appear to be interested in potential free agent Mitsutaka Goto (Orix) since they're trying to find ways to upgrade the middle of their infield.  And it seems they may have given up on Kazuo Matsui.

The Eagles will apparently end the year 1.2 - 1.3B in the red.  While revenue from sponsors and broadcast rights were more or less at the same level as their 2009 season, it seems they took a fairly big hit in ticket sales (down about 300M yen).  Merchandising and food sales also didn't see much growth.

Rakuten pulled in about 8.9B yen this year, down about 500M from last season (not inclusive of CS revenue) when they finished about 800M in the red.
