Chunichi Dragons

Hirokazu Ibata was examined at a hospital in Nagoya on Wednesday and decided not to have surgery on his right ankle during the season and will instead rely on rehab and treatment.  The ankle will be immobilized.  He will begin his rehab today.

Had Ibata opted for surgery, it would have taken about two months for a full recovery.

Hanshin Tigers

Kosuke Fukudome (left knee) spent about an hour taking batting practice on Wednesday.  He is still scheduled to take situational batting practice between August 2 and 4.

Hiroki Uemoto took batting practice on Wednesday for the first time since he had surgery on his left ankle.  Depending on his condition, he two could take situational batting practice between August 2 and 4.

Tsuyoshi Nishioka (left knee) is hoping to make it back to the active roster in the minimum ten days, if possible -- he has his sights set on playing in a Ni-gun rehab game on the 6th against Softbank.  He also wants to take advantage of his time at Ni-gun to prepare himself for the stretch run (late-August, early-September games).

Source: Sports Hochi 8/1/2013

According to Sanspo, Nishioka's injury is in the bottom area of his left knee -- the meniscus and ligaments are fine.  He will take things easy over the first few days to give his body some time to recover from fatigue and will then work on building strength and flexibility.

Yakult Swallows

Ryo Hirai had surgery to clean out his right shoulder on Tuesday.  There were no complications.  It will most likely take half a year for a full recovery.

Shohei Tateyama had hip surgery at a hospital in Tokyo on June 28.

"I was already having pain in this area and decided to schedule the surgery in such a way that it would not affect how long it takes me to return from the reconstructive surgery I had on my right elbow [early in the year].

The timing was not great to have the surgery after the right elbow because I can not use crutches and a decrease in workouts will mean longer rehab, but I received a lot of support from all kinds of people, including my doctors.

... It seems the shape of the bones can play a large part in physical problems, but since this is only affecting my left leg, the strain of throwing the ball is the cause."

Hanshin Tigers

Kosuke Fukudome took fielding practice in the infield (at third base) on Tuesday for the first time since he had surgery on his left knee.  He also spent some time taking indoor batting practice.

Nippon Ham Fighters

Sho Nakata has been a DH in his last three starts because of some discofort in his left hamstring.  Nakata wants to return to playing left, but the team has been playing it safe.  Whether or not he returns to the outfield today will depend on his condition before the game.

Softbank Hawks

Shota Takeda (right shoulder fatigue) started a Ni-gun game against Hiroshima at YafuOku Dome today.  He gave up a run (unearned) on five hits over four innings of work.

Takeda will likely spend about a month working through issues at Ni-gun before returning to Ichi-gun sometime in or after August.

Kenji Otonari (surgery to treat ossification of yellow ligament) started his rehab at the Saitozaki training facilities on Tuesday.

Otonari originally thought it might take four to five months for a full recovery, but doctors told him early detection and treatment could mean a return in about three months.

Said Otonari, "I should be ok for opening day next year.  I now have a goal to aim for."

According to Nikkan Sports, he could be shooting to participate in the Phoenix League later on this fall.

Softbank Hawks: Sadaharu Oh willing to take Wily Mo Pena under his wing

Yuichi Honda worked out with Soichiro Tateoka at Miyuki Stadium in Ureshino on Tuesday.  Workouts included running, playing catch, fielding practice, and BP.

Honda will continue his workouts in Ureshino through to the 14th and then head to Saipan on the 16th.

===

Sadaharu Oh told reporters on Monday he would be more than happy to help Wily Mo Pena make the adjustment to Japanese baseball (if he needs it).  He also figures Pena is good for about 40 homers out of the clean-up spot.

===

1st round draft pick Shota Takeda is apparently very flexible and can throw the ball without placing a lot of strain on his shoulder.

After three hour practices on Monday, Takeda spent an additional hour and a half taking fielding practice.
