Yomiuri Giants

  • Shinnosuke Abe started having problems with his neck on the 13th.  A Lotte game scheduled on that day was canceled because of rain.  He worked out separately from the rest of the team.  He managed to play in a Softbank game on the 15th with his neck taped, but the pain got worse.  He was allowed to leave early on Tuesday (he did not play in the Seibu game) and was examined at a hospital.  There are some concerns he might not be ready in time for opening day.  Source: Sponichi 3/19/2014

Hanshin Tigers

  • Tsuyoshi Nishioka did not play in Tuesday's practice game against Yakult and instead returned to Osaka to get treatment for his back tightness. Source: Daily Sports 3/19/2014 ... Yutaka Wada told reporters on Wednesday that Nishioka's results from the hospital came back negative for any problems.  He could rejoin the team on Friday depending on how he feels after workouts on Thursday.  Source: Sponichi 3/19/2014
  • 1st round draft pick Yuta Iwasada resumed playing catch on Tuesday.  An MRI on the 17th revealed an old ligament injury, but no tear.  Source: Sanspo 3/19/2014
  • Hayata Ito still has some swelling in his right hand -- he took an HBP off of it during a Kyoiku League game against Chunichi on the 16th.  He was in the line-up for a Ni-gun intra-squad game on Tuesday, but only to play the outfield.  Source: Sanspo 3/19/2014

Yokohama Bay Stars

  • Takayuki Kajitani did not play in Wednesday's game because of pain in his neck and in the back of his left thigh.  He is also expected to miss Friday's game against Hanshin as a precaution.  Source: Sponichi 3/19/2014

Seibu Lions

  • Takeya Nakamura left Wednesday's game against Hiroshima with discomfort in his left side.  He was the starting designated hitter and batted fifth.  He struck out in his one trip to the plate.  Nakamura did not take batting practice before the game and struck out without swinging the bat.  The Lions feel he should be okay to play in Friday's game against Lotte (start at first base, two trips to the plate).  Source: Sponichi 3/19/2014, Nikkan Sports 3/19/2014

Chiba Lotte Marines

  • Tsutomu Ito provided reporters with updates on Toshiaki Imae and Takashi Ogino on Wednesday.  Ito does not expect things to drag out with either player, but cautioned there was still a chance they might not be ready for opening day (worst case scenario).  He also said he did not want them to rush their recoveries because a setback would mean they would miss even more time.  Source: Sponichi 3/19/2014

Shuichi Murata took an HBP off his left side during Tuesday's game against the Yakult Swallows.  He started today's game against Yakult on the bench as a precaution.  He made it into the game on defense in the top of the 9th and hit a single to center in the bottom half of the inning.

"There is a little discomfort, but it will be fine since I was able to play.  Things are getting better," Murata said.

Nippon Ham Fighters

Yuki Saito (right shoulder) on his start against the Orix Buffaloes tonight:

I was able to get up onto the mound without getting nervous.  My control was not where I wanted it to be.  I know what I need to work on.  I was able to throw freely without worrying about my shoulder at all.  I think things will be fine if I can increase the number of pitches I am happy with.  The cheering from the fans was a big help.

Hideki Kuriyama on the Saito:

It is as everyone was able to see.  This is more than the results.  He has really been through a lot.

He was also surprised.  I think he has done a good job.  This is an important time for him.  This should carry over to next season.

Eiichi Koyano was removed on defense in the 4th inning of tonight's game against the Orix Buffaloes because of cramps in both his hamstrings.

Ryosuke Miyaguni will likely get the opening day start.  If he does, at twenty years and eleven months, he will be the second youngest pitcher in franchise history to start the first game of the year.  The youngest: Masumi Kuwata in 1988 at twenty years and zero months.

1st round draft pick Tomoyuki Sugano is scheduled to start an exhibition game against Rakuten on the 23rd.  Assuming the same pitching schedule, he could make his first regular season start on the 30th against Hiroshima.

If Sugano makes the start, he will become the first rookie pitcher in franchise history since the introduction of the draft in 1965 to make their first start within the team's first two games of the season.  Koji Uehara (1999), Hiroshi Kisanuki (2003), and Hirokazu Sawamura (2011) hold the current record with starts within the team's first three games of the season.

Before 1965: Yoshiaki Ito (1959) and Kunio Jonouchi (1962) both got opening day starts in their first years.
