Takahiro Fujioka will miss some time due to left shoulder discomfort

Fujioka was taken off the active roster on July 2 to get some work in at Ni-gun.  He started a Ni-gun game against Yokohama on July 10, got lit up (2 IP, 18 BF, 71 NP, 9 H, 1 HR, 2 SO, 2 BB, 10 R, 9 ER), and tweaked his left shoulder.

Said Norifumi Nishimura, "[Fujioka] has some discomfort so it will take a little more time.  As long as he can return in September when the games become more important..."

Fujioka did begin playing catch a few days ago and will need to make at least one Ni-gun rehab start before he makes it back to the active roster.

Sanspo is reporting that the Chiba Lotte Marines plan on selecting Toyo University LHP Takahiro Fujioka with their first pick at this year's draft.  The article also mentions that the Marines have 10 alternate choices in case they miss out on Fujioka.

It's still early, so these kinds of reports may sound piontless, but they do make for a nice reason to post player stats.

Fujioka has pitched well at the 2011 All-Japan University Tournaments -- he made headlines on the 8th when he struck out 19 batters and tied a tournament record (incidentally, 15 scouts from the US and Japan were in the stands for that game).

2011 Stats

All-Japan University Tournament

Date Res IP H SO HBP/BB ER
6/10 CG, W 7.0 2 13 3 0
6/8 W 9.0 5 19 1 1

2011 Spring League

Date Res IP BF NP H SO HBP/BB ER
5/26* 0.1 1 7 0 1 0 0
5/25* L 2.0 12 38 5 2 1 2
5/24 CG, W 9.0 35 152 6 10 3 2
5/19* 2.0 6 21 0 3 1 0
5/18 CG, L 9.0 32 118 5 6 4 1
5/6 CG, W 10.0 42 159 10 10 4 1
5/4 CG, W 9.0 34 133 5 12 2 2
4/27* 1.2 5 15 0 2 0 0
4/26 CG, W 9.0 32 127 6 13 1 1
4/14* 2.2 11 48 1 5 2 0
4/13 CG, W 9.0 30 136 4 15 0 1

That works out to:

G GS W-L IP BF NP H SO HBP/BB ER ERA
11 6 5-2 63.2 240 954 42 79 18 10 1.41

And over the course of his university career, Fujioka is 21-8 with a 1.39 ERA in 41 games; he has also fanned 269 batters and allowed just 153 hits over 245 innings.
