Yokohama Bay Stars announce dismissal of Obana and six other coaches

The Yokohama Bay Stars announced today that Takao Obana will not be returning next season.

The following coaches will also not be returning:

General coach - Tetsuji Okamoto

Pitching coach - Atsushi Yoshida

Battery coach - Yoichi Fukuzawa

Bullpen coach - Shinya Ashizawa

OF/base-running coach - Osamu Yonemura

Roving batting coach - Shigeru Sugimura

The Bay Stars have also posted the following comment from Obana:

Thank you for your passionate support this past season.  Finishing in last place despite the support is entirely my fault.  I offer my deepest apologies.

Regarding this season, the young players really started coming along in September and October.  I think the team will be able to approach the 2012 season in much better shape and the fans should be happy with what they see.

When thinking over the last two years, I think of how I started a number of things from scratch and slowly built things up.  It's too bad this had to happen now.  Development has taken a little longer than I initially expected, but there is no doubt that the team is growing.  I mapped out a three-year plan and having to leave partway through is disappointing.  Like a child growing up, I think this is the stage where there will be sudden growth spurts so I think everyone will be able to enjoy the team next season.

I appreciate all the support you gave over the last two years.
Thank you very much.

Not too much of a surprise but...

Takao Obana informed the Yokohama Bay Stars today that he didn't want to attend the 2011 draft.  Team president Takao Kaji will be responsible for making any draws if other teams select the same player the Bay Stars choose in the first round.

Yokohama Bay Stars: Takao Obana could be gone if DeNA buys the team

The Yokohama Bay Stars informed Takao Obana and the rest of the Ichi-gun coaches that they will be going on hiatus for an indefinite amount of time.  Ni-gun manager Kazuyuki Shirai will be taking over in the meantime (he'll be in charge during the fall camp that begins in November).

Managing director Teiji Sato told reporters that the team decided to give the Ichi-gun staff a hiatus because they weren't quite sure how things were going to develop as ownership changed hands from TBS Holdings to DeNA.  That means there is a possibility one or all of the Ichi-gun staff will be let go.

An early morning report by Sanspo mentions Shinjo has a possible replacement manager.

UPDATE @ 1:49pm - A number of reports (like Sponichi, Daily Sports) are saying that if DeNA purchases the club, Obana will be on his way out.  A separate Daily Sports articles notes that Atsuya Furuta could be a managerial candidate.  Other candidates mentioned: Kazuhiro Sasaki, Daisuke Yamashita, Kazuyuki Shirai, and Hiromitsu Ochiai.

General coach Tetsuji Okamoto's dismissal has already been decided.

Daily Sports reports that Takao Obana could be on his way out as manager of the Yokohama Bay Stars.  They also list current Chunichi manager Hiromitsu Ochiai, former players Kazuhiro Sasaki and Daisuke Yamashita, and current Ni-gun manager Kazuyuki Shirai as possible candidates to replace Obana.

I have no idea how true the rumors are, but Ochiai could be an extremely interesting option for the Bay Stars.

President of TBS Holding, Keizo Zaitsu, told reporters earlier today that he was informed Takao Obana will be managing the club in 2011.

Speaking in front of about 50 members of the media, Zaitsu also offered an apology to the fans and players for creating a stir over the last few weeks.

"It wasn't about the money, but more about the direction in which we wanted to see the club head in," said Zaitsu.

JS Group Corporation (JSGC) also held a press conference earlier today and Kazumi Mizoguchi, Tostem Vice President, said that they tried to put a deal together and kept at it until the very last minute, but still couldn't get something together that both sides could agree on.

JSGC: Takao Obana’s job in 2011 up in the air

The were rumors about Takao Obana's job being up in the air for the 2011 season were confirmed to be true yesterday by Kazumi Mizoguchi (he's JS Group Corporation's project leader working on the purchase of the Yokohama Bay Stars).

"I'm sure if we looked, we could find a bunch of candidates all across Japan," said Mizoguchi.  "And it's possible that a fair number of them would be ok with joining even if we approached them in mid-November of December."

Regarding Obana, Mizoguchi said, "If we try to contact [Obana] it'll probably create unnecessary strain, so it's probably best that we don't. ... I think we need to handle personnel decision without getting too emotional."

Regarding Yokohama: "It's probably the best place amongst all the teams.  It's close to the station, and proximity to the Shinkansen is also important.  In that sense I think Yokohama is a good choice."

And if JSGC does indeed purchase the Bay Stars, it seems their team name for the 2011 season will indeed be the Yokohama LIXIL Bay Stars.

Takao Obana’s Press Conference

Takao Obana held his press conference today (Friday, 11/13) on a cruise ship called Marine Rouge.

Obana was signed to a 3-year deal worth 100M yen a year and was assigned the number 87.

What follows are his comments from the press conference (via Sanspo):

Yokohama has been in a slump...

No offense, but this was a pretty good team to play against.  But making a weak team strong is what will make things job interesting and a challenge.  As long as I'm going to do this, I'm going to aim for the top.

Your style of baseball?

Analytical Baseball.  I'll do the research.  And if I can come up with the numbers that indicate something, I'm sure the players will understand my reasoning.  That will be the basis of my coaching.

Your thoughts on the rebuilding of the pitching staff...

I have already looked at the data and I think we can drop about 100 earned runs.  Dropping another 50 runs from there will be the key to winning a Championship.

What kinds of things will you bring up with the players?

I want them to think that our job is to win.  Pitchers need fighting spirit in order to win.  I want the pitchers to face each batter head on.

You'll also be facing your old team, the Giants...

I think it'll be difficult to face them straight on.  I'll use whatever means necessary in order to win.

Bay Stars to begin negotiations with Takao Obana

The Bay Stars could begin moving forward on the Takao Obana front this week.  Obana told the press again on Sunday that the Bay Stars have contacted him and that he has already informed the Giants of the news.

"Have I been contacted by Yokohama?  Yes, I've heard from them.  And I've already spoken to the manager and the ball club about it," said Obana.

He continued, "I've more or less made a decision, but this isn't the place to talk about that.  I don't want to cause a stir and create any problems."

The Giants will not be taking Obana with them to the Japan - Korea Championships on the 14th, a possible indication that he may be joining the Bay Stars shortly.

Bay Stars owner Kiyoshi Wakabayashi visited Giants' owner Takuo Takihana on Monday for permission to hire Obana as their new manager.  The Giants appear to have agreed.

=== UPDATE 11:00PM JST

The Bay Stars will hold a press conference within the next couple of days announcing Obana as their next manager.  After the press conference, Obana will rush off to Okinawa to meet up with his new team for Fall camp.

The Yomiuri Giants likely won't step in the way of Takao Obana stepping down as pitching coach in order to pursue a career as manager of the Yokohama Bay Stars.

Internally, the club is already preparing to promote Ni-gun pitching coach Masaki Saito to Ichi-gun pitching coach.
