Batting Practice Bullpen Sessions

Thursday

  • 4th round draft pick Shohei Habu took seventy-five swings and hit four over the fence. (Nikkan Sports)

Friday

  • Kam Mickolio threw thirty-four pitches, including off-speed pitches.  This was his second bullpen session since the start of spring camp. (Nikkan Sports)

Thursday

  • Katsuhiro Nagakawa threw thirty-four pitches.  This was his second bullpen since the start of spring camp.  (Sports Hochi Osaka)

===

Don Wakamtasu observed spring camp at Okinawa Stadium today (he is friends with Kenjiro Nomura).

===

1st round draft pick Yusuke Nomura is planning to toss his first spring camp bullpen session sometime during the second block.

===

Takeru Imamura's new delivery did not impress pitching coach Yutaka Ono.

Via Sanspo: "I told him not to rush the throws...  He has not stability.  He is all over the place.  His currently delivery is no good.  It is a problem," said Ono.

Via Sponichi: "There is a problem with the delivery I saw today.  He is the type of pitcher that paces himself by raising his leg slowly and he was throwing too quickly.  [Rushing the delivery] messes with the release point and creates instability."

The Hiroshima Carp play a practice game against the Nippon Ham Fighters on February 11.  Likely starters at this point: Yuki Saito (HAM) vs Yuki Saito (HIR).

Yesterday's exhibition game against the Yomiuri Giants:

The Carp beat the Giants, 4-1.

===

Takahiro Iwamoto was forced to work on his move back to first base for about 25 minutes during practice today because he was picked-off during yesterday's exhibition game against the Yomiuri Giants.  Fielding base-running coach Koichi Ogata worked with Iwamoto directly; Kenjiro Nomura dropped in partway through the session and provided his own advice as well.

===

Ryuji Yokoyama faced Akihiro Higashide, Yuichiro Mukae, Yoshihiro Maru, and Shogo Kimura during BP yesterday and threw 50 pitches.  It was Yokoyama's second outing as a BP pitcher in as many days.

===

Takeru Imamura has not allowed a run over 5 innings of play (3 innings yesterday and 2 innings against the Nippon Ham Fighters on 2/12).  He also topped out at 137km/h yesterday.

The Carp have the day off today.

===

Takahiko Aoki, Hirofumi Ueno, and Takayuki Oshima did some light workouts during the team's day off today.  All three pitchers are expected to make appearances during tomorrow's exhibition game against the Yomiuri Giants.

Aoki will probably need to have a strong outing tomorrow (if he wants to stick around with the Ichi-gun group), especially after he gave up 7 runs over 2 innings during a practice game against the Nippon Ham Fighters on 2/12.

===

Takeru Imamura will be getting the exhibition game start against the Yomiuri Giants tomorrow.

Imamura - "I'm looking forward to pitching against such a strong team.  I really want to shut them down. ... I'll attack the inside corners.  I want to know how aggressively I can pitch.  And if I can get the inside corners, then it'll give me more room the breath on the outsider corners. ... It's about the results.  I was put put up a string of 0s on the scoreboard.  And I want to go for strikeouts when I can."

===

Giancarlo Alvarado threw 128 pitches in the bullpen yesterday.  He also got tips on how to throw the fork from special temporary pitching coach Hideo Nomo.

===== 2/8 @ 10:10pm

Seems Yuki Saito (HAM, 1st round) was a little concerned with Fukui and tried to call him on his mobile.  Fukui couldn't answer the phone and called him back and the two spoke about Fukui's injury and Saito's daily coverage on the media.

For practice today, Fukui played catch at a distance of about 60 meters.  The club is hopeful that he'll be ok to rejoin the team for regular practice beginning on the 10th.

===

Kan Otake threw 58 pitches in the bullpen today (sitting catcher).  Pitching coach Yutaka Ono told reporters the club wasn't too concerned with Otaka at this point and that they were glad to see him throwing harder than in his last session.  That said, the club continue to keep a close eye on Otake's shoulder.

===

The Seisei High School (Shizuoka) baseball team watched the Carp practice for about 2 hours yesterday.

===== 2/8 @ 2:31pm

Dennis Sarfate faced Yoshiyuki Ishihara and Yoshikazu Kura during BP today and threw 40 pitches (including his curve and slider) and gave up 3 could-be hits.  He also topped out at 151km/h.

===

Takeru Imamura gave up 8 could-be hits during his 48-pitch BP outing yesterday.  He threw only fastballs.  Imamura is using a slightly modified delivery from last season where he raises his left leg a little higher in order to build up more momentum in his right leg.

===

Kenta Maeda threw 30 pitches to a standing catcher yesterday.  And beginning with his 22nd pitch, he threw 3 consecutive curves.

Regarding the curve: "My fastball gets betters when I throw the curve.  It because there's vertical spin on it.  I need to throw the ball using a slow / big arm motion and that actually helps with my fastball."

Regarding his opening day starts: "I never do well during exhibition games.  It's better if I get hit.  Getting scored on, switching gears...  If I keep throwing up 0's I won't be able to experience some of those things once the regular season starts. ... I'm still in the process of getting ready, so I don't go all out.  Maybe at about 70-80%.  I can't really get into it, and I'm not very good at exhibition games.  I'd like to try and maybe do better during my last [exhibition game] outing, put some feeling into it."

===

Yuya Fukui (1st round) told reporters yesterday that he was feeling fine (left hamstring tightness) and that he was at around 60-70%.  The team will decide when Fukui tosses his next decision after tomorrow's day-off.

Fukui also celebrated his 23 birthday today and started throwing the ball harder during catch.

===== 2/7 @ 10:25pm

Takeru Imamura made an appearance during BP today and threw 48 pitches.  Imamura appears to have also won a shot at pitching in a practice game against the Nippon Ham Fighters on the 12th.

===

Yuki Saito faced Kenta Kurihara and Chad Tracy during BP today and threw 56 pitches.

Saito managed to break Tracy's bat and later told reporters, "[I probably broke that bat] because it was a low pitch that was hit off the end of the bat.  My fastballs were actually a lot better than I thought they'd be.  The pitches I was throwing toward the end were close to my ideal."

===

Otake told reporters today that he felt fine (no unusual tightness in his muscles) a day after tossing his first bullpen session in about 4 months.

Otake played some light catch today and plans on throwing a little bit harder tomorrow.  If his arm is feeling fine after that, he'll toss another bullpen session some time after that (during the third block).

===== 2/7 @ 3:57pm

Yuya Fukui (1st round) told reporters yesterday that while he didn't feel any pain in his left hamstring, he did feel some discomfort.  He also said that it was nothing serious.

And just like yesterday, Fukui worked out with Mike Schultz today.

===

Kan Otake is hoping to pitch to a squatting catcher sometime before the 13th (after that, the Ichi-gun team heads to Miyazaki for the second leg of spring camp).
