Yakult Swallows: Tatsuyoshi Masubuchi taken off active roster with right elbow tightness/pain

Tatsuyoshi Masubuchi was taken off the active roster on Monday because of tightness in his right elbow.  Masubuchi suffered the injury while fielding a bunt in the 9th inning of Sunday's game against the Hiroshima Carp.

Said Masubuchi, "I went for the ball and tried to make a throw to second.  At that moment, I felt the muscles in my elbow tense up."

Masubuchi will be evaluated at a hospital.  Regardless of his condition, he will not be able to return to the active roster until October 18, well after the First Stage of the Climax Series.  Yuki Shichijo could make the First Stage Climax Series roster as a reliever in his place.

Bullpen Sessions / Batting Practice

Saturday

  • Shohei Tateyama faced Masayoshi Miwa, Yasushi Iihara, and Ryosuke Morioka during batting practice.  He threw a total sixty-five pitches and allowed two could-be hits.  This was Tateyama's first batting practice outing during spring camp. (Nikkan Sports)

===

Orlando Roman is scheduled to start tomorrow's practice game against LG.  Roman told reporters he might test his knuckle if the situation permits, like two outs and no runners.  The last time he threw a knuckleball was back when he was in the New York Mets' organization in 2005.

===

The Swallows could give exhibition game starts on February 25 (vs Hanshin) and February 26 (vs Rakuten) to Masanori Ishikawa and Shohei Tateyama.

===

Tatsuyoshi Masubuchi next start could come against the Nippon Ham Fighters on February 23.

Masubuchi has already thrown 1,000+ pitches during spring camp.

FYI: Roman earned the nickname Goriraimo because he looks like the character with the same name from the Dokono Gaeru manga series.

Training camp for the 2011 draft class began at the Toda training facilities in Saitama todayWorkouts lasted about three hours and included running, playing catch, and fielding practice.

Junji Ogawa had a chance to introduce himself to the players before the start of practices.  Ogawa also spent some time watching over the workout and was particularly interested in 3rd round draft pick Wataru Hiyane (he likes his speed: 50 meters in 5.9 seconds).

===

The Swallows held their first staff meeting of the year in Toda, Saitama today.

===

Ryoji Aikawa left for Saipan out of Narita Airport with Yoshinori Sato, Tatsuyoshi Masubuchi, Yuki Mizuno, Masato Nakazawa, Yuichi Matsumoto, and Hitoshi Yamamoto on Tuesday.

Aikawa is hoping to push his weight to about 95-96kg before the start of the season (from around 87kg during the 2011 season; he currently weighs around 93kg) by increasing the amount he eats (like eating five eggs a day and 4-5 meals a day) and adding supplements to his diet.  He has also hired a personal trainer to help him.

Masubuchi told reporters that he would like to throw around 500 pitches (in total) during his workouts in Saipan.
