Toru Hosokawa modified his catcher's mitt to make sure it fell within the new equipment guidelines that passed last month.  It used to be white and black, but since white is no longer allowed, he had the white parts dyed black and the white strings replaced with black strings.  He had used the glove for six to seven years, so it was broken in, but after the changes, it no longer looked or felt like the glove he had come to love.

Hiroaki Takaya has a red and white mitt he was planning to use this season after spending about a year breaking it in, but he too will have to either swap out the white sections, or use something else.

Yakult Swallows

Shinichi Takeuchi fouled a ball off his leg on Friday.  He was examined at a Tokyo hospital today and diagnosed with fracture in his right kneecap.  No word on how much time he will require for a full recovery, but he will most likely miss the rest of the season.

Seibu Lions

Yusei Kikuchi (left shoulder inflammation) may not be able to return to the active roster this season.  He tossed a bullpen session on Friday but had to stop after throwing six pitches because of discomfort in his left shoulder.  His scheduled Ni-gun start against Nippon Ham today was canceled as a precaution.

Kikuchi was diagnosed with inflammation in his left shoulder in August.  He was shut down for about three weeks and started throwing on either August 31 or September 3.  He was rebuilding shoulder strength by tossing three to four bullpen sessions a week while continuing with his rehab and treatment.

The pain is apparently in a different muscle.

Softbank Hawks

The Hawks are planning to give Toru Hosokawa a little time off after he took an HBP off the left side of his head in a game against Seibu on the 11th.  Hosokawa was diagnosed with a bruise and made his way into the starting line-up on the 12th, but suffered symptoms of a concussion after he took a foul tip off his mask during the game.  The Hawks would like to keep a close eye on Hosokawa over the next two or three days to make sure he is ok.

Hosokawa did not play in today's game against the Nippon Ham Fighters.

Rakuten Eagles

Hiroaki Shimauchi hurt his left shoulder while trying to catch a ball during Friday's game against Orix.  He was taken off the active roster today after he was diagnosed with a injury in his left shoulder (glenoid labrum).  He will require six to eight weeks for a full recovery.  He will not need surgery.

Chiba Lotte Marines

Toshiaki Imae (right ankle sprain) played in a Ni-gun rehab game against Yokohama on Friday.  He was the starting DH and batted third.  He went 1-for-3.

"I could not walk for two days after I got hurt, but it has gotten much better.  I was able to play in a game and was able to run without any difficulty so I am fine," said Imae.

He was scheduled to play third in today's Ni-gun game against Seibu.  If there are no setbacks, he could return to the active roster in time for the two-game Orix series that begins on the 17th.

Orix Buffaloes

Takuya Shimada took a batted ball off his face during pre-game practices today.  He was taken to the hospital and diagnosed with a nose fracture.

Shimada was taking fielding practice at short when a batted ball struck him in the area near his nose.  He was able to walk back to the dugout on his own, while holding a towel against his nose to soak up the blood.  After receiving treatment at the hospital, he returned to the stadium and took his place in the dugout.  He made it into the game in the 9th as a defensive replacement at first.

Shimada has been given the green light to play.  It will take about three weeks for a full recovery.

Yokohama Bay Stars

Tony Blanco was removed from tonight's game against the Yomiuri Giants after he hurt his leg while running to first.  With a runner on second and two out in the 3rd inning, Blanco hit a grounder to right.  He started slow out of the box and when he approached the bag, he rushed to reach it because the throw was coming to first.

Nyjer Morgan was also taken out of the game after an at bat in the 3rd (just before Blanco grounded out to right) in which he fouled a ball off his right knee.

Yamato (right pinky) started taking fielding practice in the outfield on Wednesday.  He focused on catching baseball since he still can not do a lot of throwing -- he began playing catch at a distance of about twenty meters after the cast came off.  He is hoping to make it back to the active roster in time for the Climax Series in October.
