  • Tomoyuki Sugano took two batted balls off his right hand during Wednesday's game against Yakult.  He had the wrist taped for practices on Thursday.  He told reporters he was fine and felt less pain than Wednesday.  Source: Sponichi 4/17/2014

Seibu Lions

  • Ryo Hayashizaki hurt his left shoulder while playing defense in the 1st inning of Thursday's game against the Chiba Lotte Marines.  He was removed from the game and taken to a hospital for testing.  Source: Nikkan Sports 4/17/2014 ...   • Tatsuya Uchi is working his way back from right ankle surgery he had in November last year. He pitched in his first Ni-gun rehab game on Thursday. Softbank Hawks

  • Seiichi Uchikawa did not participate in workouts at YafuOku Dome on Thursday because of pain in his right buttock.  He was at the stadium, but only to get treatment.  Uchikawa started feeling discomfort in the area during a game on the 15th against Rakuten.  Source: Sanspo 4/17/2014

Hiroshima Carp

  • Kenta Maeda worked out at Mazda Stadium on Wednesday.  He resumed playing catch and slowly stretched out his arm until he was throwing at a maximum distance of about sixty meters.  Maeda told reporters he threw the ball light and easy and felt no pain.  He is planning to throw harder on Thursday.  Source: Nikkan Sports 4/16/2014 ... The Carp will wait to make a decision on Maeda until Thursday.  If he is okay, he will most likely start a game on the 20th against Yokohama.  If not, he could be taken off the active roster.  It was the first time he played catch in four days.  Source: Sponichi 4/16/2014

Chunichi Dragons

  • Kazuki Yoshimi pitched in a batting practice scrimmage at Nagoya Stadium on Wednesday.  He faced eight hitters, gave up two hits, and struck out three.  He could pitch in his first Ni-gun rehab game on May 1 against Orix at Nagoya Stadium.  Source: Sponichi 4/16/2014

Yokohama Bay Stars

  • Tony Blanco felt pain in the back of his left thigh after sliding into second in the 4th inning of Wednesday's game against Chunichi.  He was taken out of the game on defense in the 5th.  Blanco has been playing through discomfort in the same area.  The Bay Stars are concerned about his condition.  Source: Sponichi 4/16/2014

Rakuten Eagles

  • Kevin Youkilis hurt his left thumb while running the bases during a game against Lotte on the 11th.  He missed Tuesday's game against Softbank and was examined at a hospital in Sendai on Wednesday.  He was diagnosed with a jammed thumb.  The Eagles are hoping he will be okay for the Nippon Ham series at kobo Stadium that begins on the 18th.  Source: Sponichi 4/16/2014

Yomiuri Giants

  • Shinnosuke Abe started having problems with his neck on the 13th.  A Lotte game scheduled on that day was canceled because of rain.  He worked out separately from the rest of the team.  He managed to play in a Softbank game on the 15th with his neck taped, but the pain got worse.  He was allowed to leave early on Tuesday (he did not play in the Seibu game) and was examined at a hospital.  There are some concerns he might not be ready in time for opening day.  Source: Sponichi 3/19/2014
  • Abe and Shuichi Murata (cut on left index finger) worked out at Tokyo Dome on Wednesday.  Both are hoping to be ready for opening day.  Source: Sponichi 3/19/2014

Hanshin Tigers

  • Tsuyoshi Nishioka did not play in Tuesday's practice game against Yakult and instead returned to Osaka to get treatment for his back tightness. Source: Daily Sports 3/19/2014 ...   • Hayata Ito still has some swelling in his right hand -- he took an HBP off of it during a Kyoiku League game against Chunichi on the 16th.  He was in the line-up for a Ni-gun intra-squad game on Tuesday, but only to play the outfield.  Source: Sanspo 3/19/2014

Chiba Lotte Marines

  • Tsutomu Ito provided reporters with updates on Toshiaki Imae and Takashi Ogino on Wednesday.  Ito does not expect things to drag out with either player, but cautioned there was still a chance they might not be ready for opening day (worst case scenario).  He also said he did not want them to rush their recoveries because a setback would mean they would miss even more time.  Source: Sponichi 3/19/2014

  • Toshiaki Imae was examined at a hospital in Tokyo and diagnosed with an inflammation in his left calf.  He will require five to ten days for a full recovery.  He will begin his rehab at Ni-gun.  Shota Omine will be called up to take his place.  Source: Sponichi 3/16/2014, Sports Hochi 3/16/2014
  • Takashi Ogino got an MRI on his right knee on Saturday.  There was fluid build-up in the knee and no problems with the meniscus.  Source: Sanspo 3/16/2014

  • Takeya Nakamura (left side) could get one at bat as a pinch-hitter in an exhibition game against Yomiuri at Seibu Dome on the 18th.  Assuming no problems, he should get more playing time over the last three exhibition games of the pre-season, beginning on the 21st against Lotte.  If he wants extra work, he could also play in up to two games at Ni-gun (25th and 26th).  Source: Nikkan Sports 3/15/2014, Sports Hochi 3/15/2014 ... [12/15/2013] Lotte signs Imae to two-year extension, could be close to Wakui

Toshiaki Imae (30) met the Chiba Lotte Marines for salary negotiations today.  Imae earned his international FA option this past season.  He decided not to exercise his option.  The two sides agreed to a two-year extension today, worth an estimated 400 million yen plus incentives.  He will make an estimated 200 million yen plus incentives next season (up sixty million yen from this past season).  He is the first Japanese position player in franchise history to reach the 200 million yen milestone in salary.

The Marines may be close to finalizing a two-year contract worth an estimated 440 million yen plus incentives with free agent Hideaki Wakui (27).  An announcement of a deal could be made as early as Monday.  People close to the negotiations told reporters negotiations took time because the two sides were having difficulty working out the incentives.

Wakui will most likely be assigned the number sixteen.

Seibu Lions

Team director Haruhiko Suzuki told reporters that he spoke to Hideaki Wakui and Yasuyuki Kataoka and presented them with terms for the 2014 season.

"They were on the team that won the championship in 2008.  They are veterans.  I told them they were needed next year," Suzuki said.

The Lions are reportedly open to signing both players even if they exercise their options to check the market.

Wakui also spoke to reporters and said, "It is fifty-fifty.  I want to be a starter and want to play for a team that needs me."

The Fighters are leaning toward signing Juan Miranda to a contract for the 2014 season -- his tryout has so far gone well.
