The media learned on June 9 that the Yomiuri Giants and Nippon Ham Fighters were working on a trade involving four players. According to people with knowledge of the negotiations, the Giants' are planning to send thirty-four-year-old outfielder Kenji Yano and twenty-nine-year-old pitcher Hideki Sunaga to the Fighters for thirty-one-year-old pitcher Toshiyuki Yanuki and twenty-six-year-old outfielder Atsushi Kita. The trade should fill needs for both teams -- Nippon Ham was looking for a right-handed bat and Yomiuri wanted to bolster their bullpen. The two sides could make an official announcement later today.

Nippon Ham Fighters: Toshiyuki Yanuki’s Stras-change

Toshiyuki Yanuki is currently working on a change-up that he apparently learned from Stephen Strasburg when he participated in the 2009 Arizona Winter Leagues.

"I want to use a change-up next season.  I'll also throw a fork, but it would be nice if I can also throw a change for strikes," said Yanuki.

Yanuki describes the pitch as follows: "It's between a fastball and a fork.  It's quicker than a fork and it'll be nice if it can make the batters think twice.  That's the Stras-change."

In other team-related news:

Atsunori Inaba met about 700 kids in Hokkaido on Friday as part of his Ai Project.  The kids sang Inaba a couple of songs and now the school and Inaba are working to see if they he can use the songs as his intro music during exhibition games.

Inaba met with 81 more kids today for a baseball clinic.

Toshiyuki Yanuki underwent surgery earlier today to remove bone fragments from his right elbow.  The club expects Yanuki to require about 6 weeks for a full recovery, meaning a return this season is highly unlikely.

Assuming no problems, Yanuki will be discharged from the hospital on the 18th and will head to Kamagaya to begin his rehab assignment.
