[1/13/2014] Bobby Keppel, Jason Bay, Vicente Padilla, Masahiro Tanaka

Former Nippon Ham Bobby Keppel has signed a minor league deal with the Cincinnati Reds, according to a tweet by Baseball America's Matt Eddy on January 12.

The Yomiuri Giants expressed an interest in Jason Bay.  Bay announced his intentions to retire on the 11th.  From SportsNet.ca's Shi Davidi:

"I haven't filed papers or anything yet, but I don't really see a scenario where I would play this year or beyond, really," the 35-year-old from Trail, B.C., told sportsnet.ca Saturday. "I had some offers, and an offer to play in Japan, actually, which could be fun for a life experience. I talked to Kevin Youkilis who's doing it, but taking the whole family over there defeats the purpose of being at home and doing the family thing.

"The writing has been on the wall, I just haven't made it official, per se. This is probably the end of the road."

Vicente Padilla turned down offers from a National League team and an NPB team because he is still not sure how effective he can be (it seems he is having some problems with lower back pain).

Softbank Hawks

Tokyo Sports figures that the Hawks will remain quiet on the FA market (specifically rank A and B free agents) this year because they are concerned about the possibility of losing talent through player compensations -- they lost Takahiro Mahara as part of compensation for signing Hayato Terahara last year.

"Player compensations are a big deal.  Having to come up with a list of players to protect is really tough.  If we are going to lose someone, then the player we sign will have to be big...," an unnamed team official said.
