[9/23/2014] Injury Report: Tony Barnette (Yakult), Ginji (Rakuten)

Hanshin Tigers

  • Ryota Arai took outdoor batting practice at Naruohama on Monday for the first time since his lower back started giving him problems. He began with some soft-toss and then took sixty-nine swings against a live arm. If his rehab goes smoothly, he could make it back to the active roster in time for the Climax Series. Hiroshima Carp

  • Kosuke Tanaka was taken off the active roster after he took a batted ball off the front portion of his head during fielding practice on the 19th. He is hoping to make it back to the active roster in the minimum ten days. The fourteen stitches he got to close a cut are slated to come out on the 26th. "I can take baths and can wash my hair normally. There are no changes in my condition. It was the worst injury of my baseball career, but I'm fine now. I plan to get back in ten days," said Tanaka. Yakult Swallows

  • Shinnosuke Abe fouled a pitch off his right ankle during an at bat in the 4th inning of Saturday's game against the Yokohama Bay Stars at Tokyo Dome. Abe was left out of the line-up on Sunday as a precaution. Source: Sanspo 9/15/2014, Daily Sports 9/15/2014

Yakult Swallows

  • Wladimir Balentien will undergo tests on his left Achilles in the United States on the 30th. He will most likely leave the team for the US some time around the 25th. He should be okay for the start of next season, even if he requires surgery. Source: Sponichi 9/15/2014

  • Kazuo Matsui was removed from Saturday's game against the Seibu Lions at Seibu Dome with pain in his lower back. He was feeling discomfort in his lower back during pre-game practices and was replaced after striking out in the top of the 1st as a precaution. Source: Sanspo 9/15/2014

  • Tomoyuki Sugano threw forty-one pitches in the bullpen on Friday -- fourteen to a standing catcher and twenty-seven to a half-bent catcher.  He had not tossed a session since the 21st due to discomfort in his lower back.  He is slated to pitch three innings in a Ni-gun rehab game on September 4 against Lotte at Giants Stadium.   • Tsuyoshi Nishioka might be able to play in his first Ni-gun rehab game some time in early September, based on his current progress. Source: Sponichi 8/30/2014

Hiroshima Carp

  • Brad Eldred tweaked his right knee while chasing after a baseball in foul territory in the 9th inning of Friday's game against the Chunichi Dragons. He was examined at a hospital in Nagoya and diagnosed with a knee contusion. Eldred was able to participate in pre-game workouts on Saturday and made the starting line-up at first, batting clean-up. Chunichi Dragons

  • Masahiko Morino felt discomfort in his left leg while running the bases in the bottom of 10th inning of Friday's game against Hiroshima and left on defense in the top of the 11th as a precaution.   • Kazuki Yoshimi (right elbow) can only play catch. The Dragons have been unable to set a timetable on his return because he is still not ready to toss bullpen sessions or do long-distance throwing. Best case scenario: he could resume bullpen sessions in mid-September at the earliest.   • Tomoyuki Sugano (right middle finger) is currently slated to pitch three innings in his first Ni-gun rehab game on September 4 against Lotte. Source: Nikkan Sports 8/29/2014 ...   • Seiichi Uchikawa banged his face into the turf and tweaked his neck as he made a diving catch in the 1st inning of Thursday's game against the Nippon Ham Fighters.  He played through to the 4th inning and was pulled on defense in the 5th.  He was questionable for Friday, but ended up making the starting line-up as a designated hitter. Nippon Ham Fighters

  • Ryo Watanabe took a batted ball off his face during practices on the 24th and suffered a nasal bone fracture.  The Fighters announced on Thursday that he was going to have surgery on September 4 to treat the fracture.  He will be able to resume workouts as soon as the swelling goes down.  Watanabe was able to play in a Ni-gun game against Yokohama on the 26th (designated hitter, batted lead-off, went 0-for-4), but opted for surgery because he was having problems with his day-to-day life.   • Tatsuro Hamada was taken out of Tuesday's game against the Yokohama Bay Stars after throwing just eleven pitches because of discomfort in his left elbow. He was taken to a hospital during the game and will get additional tests on Wednesday. Source: Sports Hochi 8/26/2014, Sponichi 8/26/2014

  • Shoichi Ino developed a cramp in his right calf during the 6th inning of Friday's game against the Yakult Swallows.  Ino told reporters on Saturday his leg was fine and that he did not expect to miss his next start.   • Wladimir Balentien took a ball hit by Taketoshi Goto off his chest while playing defense in the 4th inning of Saturday's game against the Yokohama Bay Stars.  He as removed from the game after the 5th and taken to the hospital for tests.  He was diagnosed with a bruise on his left chest.  He might be taken off the active roster if he is unable to play on Sunday.   • Ryosuke Hirata (left ankle) took batting practice at Nagoya Stadium on Thursday.  He faced three different pitchers and recorded four could-be hits. He could play in his first rehab game some time before the end of the month. Source: Nikkan Sports 7/24/2014
  • Kazuki Yoshimi was taken off the active roster on Thursday with some inflammation in his right elbow.  Yoshimi started feeling tightness in the elbow during his last start on the 23rd.  He was examined at a hospital on Thursday and diagnosed with inflammation.  There were no other abnormalities.  For now, the Dragons plan to skip him once in the starting rotation. Yakult Swallows

  • Wladimir Balentien missed Tuesday's game with pain in his left wrist.  He was examined at a hospital on Wednesday morning.  No abnormalities were found.  He still had some pain in the wrist, but was able to play on Wednesday and hit his first home run since May 31.   • Kazuhiro Wada took an HBP off the left side of his head during Monday's game against Yokohama.  Tests at a hospital did not reveal any abnormalities.  He did participate in pre-game warm-ups on Tuesday, but did not take part in other workouts like batting practice.  Yokohama's Shun Yamaguchi briefly met with Wada before the game to apologize for the pitch he threw.  He did not play on Tuesday and instead rested.  He is considered day-to-day.   • 1st round draft pick Ayumu Ishikawa left Monday's game against Softbank after seven innings because he developed a cramp in his right thumb while throwing practice pitches before the start of the 8th inning (he had a hard time straightening the thumb out). Nippon Ham Fighters

  • Sho Nakata was replaced by a pinch-runner in Sunday's game against Softbank because of concerns with his left knee.  Nakata has been used as a designated hitter ever since he took an HBP off the knee during a game against Lotte on the 6th.  The knee had to be drained because the swelling was not going away.  He is a question mark for Tuesday's game against Seibu.
