Wladimir Balentien used Junji Ogawa's first baseman's mitt during fielding practice on Friday.  The mitt still needs to be broken in, since it was made last year.  Ogawa offered him the glove because he was having problems with his defense and thought it might have something to do with the glove.  The new glove apparently did not help.

[2/4/2014] Yakult Swallows: Wladimir Balentien hearing postponed

by on Feb.04, 2014 @ 7:48 pm, under NPB

Wladimir Balentien's hearing took place on February 3.  Team President and Acting Owner Tsuyoshi Kinugasa held a press conference at the team offices today.  Nikkan Sports has posted portions of his interaction with the media.

Last night, at 9:00pm Japan time, a hearing took place in Florida.  From the start, prosecutors had not made it clear to the judge how they wanted to proceed with Balentien.  There was a request for an extension.  The next hearing will take place on February 11 at 9:00am US time.  The hearing yesterday ended in about ten minutes.  As I said, the prosecutors had not decided on how to proceed, so there is nothing more to report.  We were hoping the wife was not going to file charges, that the prosecution was not going to indict, and that his innocence would be confirmed, but it ended in an extension.

What happens next?

As we have been saying, if his innocence is confirmed, then nothing more will happen, but if he is indicted, this will go to trial and he will work with his lawyers and stand by his plea of not guilty.

Sports Hochi has posted portions of the press conference.

How do you feel right now?

I want to apologize to the fans and to my teammates.  I am glad I made it back in time [for the start of spring camp].

What is your condition?

I am not as prepared as I usually am, but I will try hard to be at my best by the time spring camp ends.

Your thoughts on spring camp?

I want to become a better hitter.  I want to make my swing more compact and I also want to become a better fielder.

What about the plans to move you to first.

I have never played the position, but I will do whatever they need me to do, I am prepared for that.

How do you feel mentally?

Once the season starts, I will leave what happened in the past behind me and will try to focus on baseball without pressure.

What are your goals for the season?

For the team to win.  I always do my best on the field.  That is how I have always played the game and I want to continue showing that to everyone.

Balentien: Well I'll, I'll try to be the same player I am, I mean uh, they get used to, they get used to me, they, they like what they see so I'll just try to the be same guy, try to play hard.  And I'll try to do, do my best.  Uh, give everything I have on the field.
