[10/27/2015] Yomiuri Giants: Yoshinobu Takahashi’s press conference from October 26

The Yomiuri Giants held a press conference at the Palace Hotel in Tokyo on October 26 to introduce Yoshinobu Takahashi as their new manager.

Some notes:

  • Fifteen television cameras and over 200 members of the media covered the press conference.
  • He sat between owner Kojiro Shiraishi and president Hiroshi Kubo.
  • He played the last few years thinking the next moment might be his last.
  • He was not sure if this was the right time to retire, but then just decided to go all in, forget the uncertainties, and accept the managerial position.
  • He made the decision as quickly as possible because he knew the team was already preparing for the 2016 season and needed a reply fast. And if he was going to do it anyway, then it might end up being better for him to start sooner rather than later.
  • He wants to build the team around players like Shinnosuke Abe, Hisayoshi Chono, Hayato Sakamoto, Tomoyuki Sugano, and Tetsuya Utsumi.
  • He is the eighteenth manager in franchise history.
  • He is the first person to become manager of the Giants immediately after retiring since Shigeo Nagashima in 1975.
  • He will join the team during fall practices on October 28.
  • He will wear the uniform number 24.
  • The two sides agreed on a three-year deal.
  • Hideki Matsui and Nagashima are fully behind Takahashi.
  • Every manager in the Central League will be in their forties next year.
  • Players he learned from: Kenshin Kawakami and Hideki Matsui.
  • Memorable games as a player: he remembers his first plate appearance and his first home run at Tokyo Dome.

The Yomiuri Giants announced today that Yoshinobu Takahashi met chief adviser Tsuneo Watanabe and owner Koijro Shiraishi in the morning and accepted their managerial offer. Additionally, Takahashi will be retiring as a player/coach.

The Giants released the following statement from Takahashi:

Today I told adviser Watanabe and owner Shiraishi that I was going to retire and accept their offer to become manager next season. There have been many great managers in Yomiuri history. I am prepared to do what it takes to get as close to that group as possible. I want to thank the fans that have supported me as a player since I first joined the Giants eighteen years ago.

A press conference is scheduled for October 26.

[10/21/2015] Yomiuri Giants offer Yoshinobu Takahashi managerial job

The media learned on October 19 that Yoshinobu Takahashi was the top candidate to replace Tatsunori Hara as manager of the Yomiuri Giants. Owner Kojiro Shiraishi told reporters they were looking for candidates that could continue what Hara started and breath some fresh air into the process. The media mentioned other candidates, like Suguru Egawa and head coach Masahiro Kawai, but it seems Takahashi was always the top candidate for the Giants.

On October 20, team president Tsunekazu Momoi admitted the organization considered Takahashi their top candidate. Team officials, including team president Hiroshi Kubo, met him for about fifty minutes at the Palace Hotel in Tokyo later in the day.

After the meeting, Takahashi spoke to the media. He said he was offered the managerial job and was "surprised because I was already forward to next season as a player." He also said it was "definitely not a bad thing and it's a great honor. I want to give them an answer as soon as possible, but I have a lot of thinking to do." When asked about being a player-manager, he did not seem to think it was an option because of how difficult it would be for him to handle both positions at the same time. Incidentally, he feels he still has something left in the tank as a player.

The Giants would like an answer as soon as possible, but are willing to wait until the start of fall camp on November 7. Honorary manager Shigeo Nagashima believes Takahashi is the team's only choice and is ready to provide him with whatever support he can give. Tatsunori Hara also promised to help.

If Takahashi accepts the offer, all six Central League managers will be in their forties next season: Mitsuru Manaka (44), Takahashi (40), Tomoaki Kanemoto (47), Koichi Ogata (46), Motonobu Tanishige (44), and Alex Ramirez (41).

Hideki Matsui remains a front office favorite, but the organization knows he is not ready to return to Japanese baseball.

Yomiuri Giants

Yoshinobu Takahashi may have tweaked his left calf during his pinch-hit at bat in the 8th inning.  He was initially set to remain in the game in left, but was pulled as a precaution -- he suffered a calf strain at the start of the season this year and the Giants were concerned he might re-injure it.

Chunichi Dragons

Hector Luna wants to have surgery on his right knee -- he is more interested in getting better than trying to win a batting title this season.  He is expected to meet with the Dragons within the next couple of days to discuss options.

Luna was re-examined at a hospital in Nagoya on the 21st and given the same diagnosis: inflammation in his right patellar ligament.

Softbank Hawks

Wily Mo Pena began his rehab at the Saitozaki training facilities on Thursday.  Workouts included running and soft-toss batting practice.

"Right now I am trying trying to get a good feel for things by swinging the bat as much as I can.  I plan to play in a [rehab] game next Tuesday.  I want to get myself ready for Ichi-gun by playing in a few games," said Pena.

He added, "I was not able to do much hitting up until now because of pain in my knee, but I want to do my best to help the team get to the playoffs and Nippon Series."
