Hiroshima Carp

According to a number of reports (Nikkan Sports, Sanspo, Sports Hochi, Sponichi; they all basically have the same article), Dennis Sarfate told reporters that Kenjiro Nomura approached him before today's game and said it was his mistake for not using him in Saturday's game.  Sarfate said that he felt frustrated after Nomura went with Kam Mickolio in the 9th on Saturday, but felt much better after Nomura admitted the mistake to him today.

Yuki Kuniyoshi not only struggled with his control today (six walks in five innings, 120 pitches), but also forgot his uniform and had to borrow one from pitching coach Yui Tomori.

Batting Practice

Saturday

  • Alex Ramirez took around fifty swings during pre-game batting practice and hit six over the fence. (Nikkan Sports)

Masaaki Koike batted clean-up today because Norihiro Nakamura felt discomfort in his left knee.  Nakamura is expected to play on Sunday.

Kiyoshi Nakahata told reporters today that Yuki Kuniyoshi will start the home opener on April 3 (vs Chunichi).

Alex Ramirez did some jogging, played some catch, and took some batting practice on Friday.  And while he did not warm-up or taking fielding practice with the Ichi-gun team today, he did participate in pre-game batting practice.

Yuki Kuniyoshi has not allowed a run over eighteen consecutive exhibition game innings (span of four games).

===

Takayuki Kajitani has ten stolen bases in eleven attempts through sixteen exhibition games.

The Bay Stars announced today that they will pray for a successful season at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu on March 27.  Fans will be welcome to join them between 10:30am and 11:00am.

Yokohama Bay Stars: March 21, 2012

Giancarlo Alvarado did not allow a run over 5.2 innings of work against the Orix Buffaloes today.  He is scheduled to leave Japan tomorrow for his brother's wedding in Puerto Rico and will return on the 26th.

Alex Ramirez did some walking on Tuesday and some light running in the outfield at Yokohama Stadium today. He also played a light round of catch.  Team conditioning coach told reporters that if Ramirez continues to make similar strides in his rehab, he might have a chance at making it back by opening day.

Tatsuya Shimozono had some problems with his left elbow during the off-season and started things off at Ni-gun spring camp.  He made it back to Ichi-gun on Tuesday and went 0-for-1 against the Rakuten Eagles.

Yuki Kuniyoshi will likely start the home opener on April 3.

Kiyoshi Nakahata attended a pep rally held at the Yokohama City Offices today.

Daisuke Miura is slated to start and pitch five innings against the Rakuten Eagles on Tuesday.

Miura, Kentaro Takasaki, and Yuki Kuniyoshi are all competing for opening day starts.

Sponichi notes that Takasaki could get the season opener on March 30 (vs Hanshin at Kyocera Dome) with Kuniyoshi getting the home opener on April 3 (vs Chunichi at Yokohama).

Bullpen Sessions / Batting Practice

Saturday

  • Kentaro Takasaki threw about forty pitches in the bullpen. (Nikkan Sports)

Kentaro Takasaki tossed a bullpen session today because his start against the Orix Buffaloes was rained out.  He is also slated to pitch against the Softbank Hawks on Sunday.

===

Kiyoshi Nakahata showed up in the first base dugout after today's game was canceled (because of the rain) and sang Anata-no Blues (あなたのブルース).

===

Nikkan Sports is reporting that Yoshitomo Tsutsugo (left ankle) may not be able to return until late April.  Nakahata does not plan on calling Tsutsugo up until he has 1) played in games and 2) played well in those games.

===

Yuki Kuniyoshi has not allowed a run over fifteen exhibition game innings.  Nakahata told reporters on Friday that at this point in time, he was leaning towards giving Kuniyoshi either the season opener on March 30 (vs Hanshin at Kyocera Dome), or the home opener on April 3 (vs Chunichi).

For the second straight game there was an error in the line-up card: both Hichori Morimoto and Sho Aranami were penciled in at right when Aranami was supposed to be in center.

According to Sponichi, Yuki Kuniyoshi may have a slight lead over Kentaro Takasaki for the opening day start since he had a better outing this weekend:

Kuniyoshi - 5 IP, 80 NP, 20 BF, 5 H, 7 SO, 0 BB, 0 R, 0 ER
Takasaki - 4 IP, 54 NP, 17 BF, 4 H (1 HR), 2 SO, 1 BB, 1 R, ER

Kiyoshi Nakahata hinted to reporters that outings for both pitchers this weekend would be important.

Softbank Hawks chairman Sadaharu Oh dropped by the third base dugout at Yahoo Dome before today's exhibition game and spoke to Kiyoshi Nakahata and GM Shigeru Takada for about twenty minutes.

Yuki Kuniyoshi's next start will likely come on March 10 against the Seibu Lions at Seibu Dome.

===

The Bay Stars won their first three exhibition games in row.  The last time they did that: 2009.  The last time they won their first three exhibition games, with ties, was in 2005.  Without ties: 2002.  And the last time they finished in first place in exhibition games: 1997, a season in which they also happened to finish in second place.
