1st round draft pick Yuki Matsui might end up staying behind in Kumejima to continue his workouts at Ni-gun camp when the team leaves for Okinawa.  The move would not be considered a "demotion" because the plan was always for him to start things out at Ni-gun.  However, if he makes progress with his balance issues and shows more consistency, he could be called up in March during the exhibition game season.

Tatsuro IwasakiAndruw Jones, and Yusuke Kosai were at first base during infield drills on Sunday.

Iwasaki has played second, third, and short in the past.  He also brought an outfielder's glove with him to spring camp, but he did not have a first baseman's mitt.  He borrowed a mitt from Jones and placed an order for one of his own.

Senichi Hoshino invited the Ichi-gun coaching staff to his house in Australia.  While there, they held a staff meeting to discuss spring camp.  One of the topics the group spent the most time on was how to handle 1st round draft pick Yuki Matsui, in addition to other young pitchers like Yoshinao Kamata and Yudai Mori.

Pitching coach Yoshinori Sato feels Kamata and Mori spent too much time working on their upper bodies and not enough time on their lower bodies.  Sato thinks that because of this, Hoshino is concerned about the players falling into the same pattern and is pushing to assign them to Ichi-gun spring camp where he and the other Ichi-gun coaches can keep an eye on them.  It would also give the young pitchers a chance to see first hand how important it is to build up the lower body.

The 2013 draft class appeared on a sports TV program in Sendai on 11th.  They were each given buttons to push as indications of a positive response and were then asked a number of questions.  One of the questions was whether they had dreams of going to the Majors.  Three indicated they were interested -- the buttons are not supposed to be linked to names to keep responses "anonymous."  1st round draft pick Yuki Matsui did not reveal what his answer was, but did say that he wanted to push himself by competing at high levels.
