Orix Buffaloes: Yuki Nishi tosses a no-hitter against the Softbank Hawks

by on Oct.08, 2012 @ 5:30 pm, under NPB
Tags: , ,

Yuki Nishi tossed a 3-0 no-hitter against the Softbank Hawks earlier today and became the seventy-sixth pitcher in NPB history to accomplish the feat.  Nishi is also the eighth player in franchise history to toss a no-hitter, first since Yoshinori Sato on August 26, 1995; and the twenty-sixth player to record a no-hitter in the Pacific League, first since Narciso Elvira on June 20, 2000.

There were three no-hitters this season, including Nishi's today.  Hiroshima's Kenta Maeda tossed the first one on April 6 against the Yokohama Bay Stars.  The Giants' Toshiya Sugiuchi followed with one on May 30 vs Rakuten Eagles.

Nishi's final line: 9 IP, 109 NP, 28 BF, 0 H, 9 SO, 1 BB, 0 R, 0 ER.

Outs: twelve ground ball outs, nine strikeouts, six fly ball outs.

UPDATE @ 9:20pm - Nikkan Sports posted Nishi's interview:

What went threw your mind when the final out was recorded?

I felt bad since it was [Kokubo's] retirement game, but was I happy.  I do not think anyone was expecting it.

What went well?

I did not overthrow and kept my pitches down.  Today, I felt confident I could throw all of my pitches for strikes.

When did you start thinking about it?

I did not really think about it that much.  I was going for the shutout.  Hikaru [Ito] kept me from giving up a hit.

What did it feel like pitching the 9th?

I had to remind myself not to get excited.  I just concentrated on each and every pitch.

What was it like facing Kokubo?

When Kokubo's turn came in the 7th, I was not sure what to do.  In the papers, he said he wanted us to come straight on, so I threw the fastball.  This was Kokubo's retirement game so I am not quite sure how I should enjoy this.

What did Moriwaki say to you?

That this was a new start.  I want to carry this into next season.

===

UPDATE 10/9 @ 10:35pm - Nishi is the:

  • ...fourteenth player in NPB history to toss a no-hitter while allowing just one base-running.
  • ...fifth player in NPB history to record a no-hitter after the pennant winner was decided.  The other four pitchers: Mitsuhiko Ishida on July 16, 1937 (Spring); Tsuneo Horiuchi on October 10, 1967; Soroku Yagisawa on October 10, 1973; and Kei Igawa on October 4, 2004.
  • ...second player in NPB history, first since the start of the two-league format, to record a no-hitter on the last day of the season.  The other was Ishida on July 16, 1937.

Akinobu Okada was not especially happy that Yoshihisa Hirano did not use his fastball more against the Hanshin Tigers on Friday.

"[Hirano] has good velocity so I would not say anything if they hit has fastball.  But [Arai] was fouling his fastball off and I do not know why he ran away and decided to go with an off-speed pitch.  He needs to think about that, as does the catcher.  Stuff like this can kill the outcome of the game," said Okada.

===

In addition to suffering a mandibular alveolar fracture, 7th round draft pick Shuhei Kojima also broke four of his bottom front teeth.

Batting Practice Bullpen Sessions

Monday

  • Dae-Ho Lee took 102 swings during lunchtime BP and hit none over the fence. (Sanspo)
  • 1st round draft pick Ryoichi Adachi took eighteen swings against Kazuya Takamiya and collected eight could-be hits. (Sanspo)

Yuki Nishi faced Tomotaka Sakaguchi and Shinji Takahashi during batting practice on Monday and allowed eleven could-be hits on fifty-two pitches (Sanspo mentions nine could-be hits; Nikkan Sports ten could-be hits).

===

Akinobu Okada told players during run-down drills between third and home on Monday that they should always try to run the runner back to third when trying to apply the tag, not when the runner is running toward home and is already fairly close to home plate.
